I've had Foothills BA Hoppyum and Seeing Double; And they were very barrel forward, but I approve there. I'd buy it if they bottled it, I'd drive there if it was on tap. IMO that good.

Outside of Burton Baton, this is the only one I've had (Knee Deep Jack Daniel's Aged Hop-D-Ranged) and I was shockingly and pleasantly surprised. I think it can work with big sweet DIPA/IIPA but I'd be highly skeptical about the outcome from something else.

BA IPA is another industry gimmick to me. It's basically a bad BA barleywine because in theory hops should be consumed quickly. There are enough bad BA barleywine's as is. Unless there is some hopping going on in the barrel itself, it's just another name for "bad BA barleywine" to me.

Burton Baton I would not consider a BA IPA, but it is very good!

Founder's Doom was a shelf turd in Central Wisconsin and probably will be again come May.

A BA IPA w/ Brett is a far better concept and I'd definitely seek one out if anyone can point me in the right direction

If they are somehow able to retain the haze after being barrel aged.....wow, just wow. To paraphrase David Bowman, my God, it's full of haze.

What does BA IPA have to do with barleywine? Why do people always besmirch that most noble of beer styles (bw) whenever a strong IPA style beer isn't hoppy enough? BW is not IPA or dipa, never has been.

And to the OP the barrel aged IPA and DIPA that have been successful (imo) are indeed dry hopped after aging.

Stone has done plenty of BA IPAs. This is not a complete list just some one the ones that I have personally had:

Cali-Belgique Aged in Red Wine Barrels
    Cali-Belgique Aged in Tequila Barrels
    Ruination Aged in Bourbon Barrels
Japanese Green Tea IPA Aged in Red Wine Barrels

I thought that they were all pretty good for the most part. The barrel aging definitely takes away some of the hop bitterness but the flavors that it adds usually works well (in Stone's case at least).

Jai Alai ipa aged on white oak was very good and had more tropical flavors come through than their non-aged variant. Plus flavors of vanilla (white oak) and dill. It is best to drink them soon after purchase for the most intense flavor. Very subtle difference really but well worthwhile.

Great Divide has a wood aged IPA that's pretty nice. Not seen a bottle less than a year old in the last few years though.

Just saw a BA IPA in TN. I did not look at it more than passing as the idea was not appealing

    Enjoy

The last ones I had were maybe two weeks from canning and were spectacular. This may be unique to Jai Alai, but I prefer the white oak version to the base beer- it seems to cut down on that nearly overbearing caramelized citrus quality and brings another dimension to the party.

    Described so well.

This one was just where "can do" was done and perhaps shouldn't have been. An intersection of style and process that seems not to bring out the merits of either. One of the few things Olde Hickory has done that I haven't liked.

Many DIPAs and TIPAs taste like barleywine after losing their hop profile -- see 120 Minute. Ergo, when it tastes more malty than hoppy, it's basically an unintended barleywine. Barleywine is one of my favorite styles and brewers need to stop perverting it with their BA IPAs.

Thanks! I love a good wine barrel so this sounds delicious.

You better believe it will catch on! There are beer dilettantes out there bored to tears with barrel aged stouts and massively hopped IPAs.

They also aged their Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA in Rye and Bourbon barrels. Was really nice and smooth but also had a nice hop character at the end. Think it was called Stygian Descent

Nobody thought of putting the barrels into a sailing ship and taking them for a long journey through tropical waters? No,it would never catch on.

Have you had Devil Dancer? For SOME DIPAs the comparison to an AMERICAN Barleywine is indeed appropriate in my opinion.
