My question is: how do the Gen-Xers (category 1) afford this hobby? I started getting into it probably when I was about 32, but no way I could afford a $20 4-pack when I was 26 except for a special occasion.

I'm not completely surprised, honestly, given that this is a website, and younger generations slew toward more internet usage (and knowledge).

Anecdotally, I'd suggest that older generations are perhaps disproportionately represented in thread activity - meaning, you can probably slew the site membership statistics toward an older mean when it comes to site activity.

But that's purely anecdotal observation, and I could be wrong.

    Gen-Xers, or Millennials?

As a member of the former, I have no problem affording this hobby. I've been in the same career for over 20 years, and carry no debt, so expensive beer isn't a problem. I'm on the younger side of Gen-X, as well, so many of my fellows are even more financially established.

How Millennials can afford this hobby is a different question. While I can't speak for them, I would conjecture that craft beer - especially at the beer nerd-level often embraced here - is a niche, even luxury expense, one that not everyone can afford, or in which everyone chooses to indulge. It's an expense no one truly needs, regardless of generation, so it comes down to choosing where to spend one's finances: vacations, cars, beer, organic eggs, assault rifles, whatever the case may be.

Given that I'm a 25 year old trapped inside a 60 year old body, what category shall I identify with?

Did that last year. Join the club!

I think the numbers were a little surprising (expected a little higher numbers on the older ranges), but in general, I have felt no one range dominated and their was a nice spread across the ranges.

3 pages on this thread? If I took the time to read every post, I'd have aged another year! :grimacing:

I also think that there may be many users (across all age groups) who would be reluctant to enter age information for online security. Without knowing how many lurkers there were who wouldn't enter their ages, we don't know if there is a statistically significant number of respondents with respect to the viewing group, or the active user group. What we know is the percentage breakdown of only those users who felt safe enough to enter their age information.

Which is still an interesting study. To me, anyway.

Just my 2 cents regarding the data. I think that using the Google Analytics for (mainly) one-time users skews the data. It appears that most people interpreted the results as active users on the site (i.e. members); however, by using google analytics if someone search google for a beer and clicks on the BA link, then they have registered as a user who receives the same weight in this as a person who visits the site daily or weekly.
Therefore, I would be more interested in the analytics of just BA members.

Beer just makes me feel younger, so how does that come into the equation?

    Don't be so paranoid.

Unrelated question, what was your first pet's name? Or your childhood street name? Mother's maiden name?

Just trying to get to know you

I'm actually quite surprised that the largest wasn't the 35-44 demographic. I'd have thought the younger guys would be too busy crushing white claws to be here :stuck_out_tongue:

Not everyone stays logged in. This is a fact that every website that has registered users deals with. Excluding theses users (via Google Analytics) from the bigger picture would skew things toward a fraction of our overall users.

It does not surprise me that there is only 5.34% in the Medicare Crowd, my people.
Being such, I find my Tastes getting more traditional and less tolerant of experimentation (Brett is making me into an Old Fart.) As for you Kids, you can call us "Old Farts" as long as you keep propping up Medicare.
