Alpine doesn't have any sort of date on it but it's always fresh because they don't make a whole lot and it sells so fast.

Actually, there is another. It also means you don't have to find out the brewer's bottling line manufacturer to know something about how long the beer remains fresh. Some bottling lines give close to 100% longer freshness for the beer than many of those currently in use, so some beers are fresher at 6 weeks than some others are at 4 weeks.

Going to vote with @jesskidden here. Every beer should have both. No reason to pass up a good stout simply because someone doesn't know the shelf life of a stout or a geuze and have only been given the bottled on date for the beer.

Bottled on for sure. This gives you the most realistic data you need to get a gauge for what you're buying. Best By is quite open to interpretation, which I'm unlikely to get such data provided from the brewery concerning.

Though I prefer bottled on, I'd settle for anything, because there is nothing worse than not knowing at all!

You know, I've visited countless breweries in my time yet haven't witnessed beer being "born"
Just what does it mean? At what point in the manufacuring process does the brewer decide it has given birth to a beer?

It seems like some type of marketing gimmick to me, targeted at a specific audience.

Bottled On, Hands down! I know enough about beer and different styles to make up my mind from there. Just give me that simple reference point, and I'll happily take it from there.

This has been brought up before. I think for most beer concourses, bottled on is the way to go.

if I know how far out they label best by it's not a problem but that info is hard to come by.

fresh beer only is the greatest resource after BA

Agreed. Even for things like IPAs, different people prefer different ages. Bottled on is the most accurate for that.

I also do enjoy "Best After" on some of the big beers (ex Deschutes). Though I do enjoy those as more a suggestion. Bottled on is always preferred.

Bottled on date for sure, let me decide. I've seen IPA's with BB dates 2years after bottling, if you didn't know that it had a 2 year shelf life you might think your buying a fresh beer.

    Bottled On.

I think there still needs to be room for consumer judgment over when to not buy.

Bottled On. The Reason? I have noticed some beers get better with age while other's have not. Yet reverse I've notice some beers are better consumed within a month and a half of the Bottled on date. I don't listen to the brewer, I listen to my own palate.

I'd like both. If not I'll take a best by label and inquire with the brewery on how far out them mark them. Bottled on dates give the retailer no pause to keep an old beer on the shelf. Tell a bottle shop when a beer was bottled and then when it expired.. One will get a reaction. I have seldom seen stone enjoy by not being given the hard sell as the date on the label nears.
