I've never seen this one at my local before. Haven't heard anything about it, is it worth picking up?
Their Schwarzbier doesn't show up for some reason unless you click on the Brewery page. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/7597/59371/ Never had it, never heard of it but it gets relatively good marks on here. If the price were right I'd pull the trigger!
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/7597/59371/ It said "schwarzbier" on the label. It wasn't blue like in the profile picture, I believe it was black. But it definitely said Schwarzbier, and it was 4.5% abv.
Speaking of Schwarzbier; I've heard good things about Oettinger Schwarzbier. Has anyone given it a go?
“I've heard good things about Oettinger Schwarzbier. Has anyone given it a go?” Matt (@mjtierney2 ), willing to take another one for the team!?! Cheers!
I have given it a go, and I'd give it a pass. Not as bad as some of their other beers, but I'm not a huge fan. May as well try it if you're curious, though, it's not going to cost you much.
Updating this for myself. I purchased a single tonight. I'm no schwarzbier expert, but this is a delicious beer. Right from the nose to the first sip, I felt this is a winner. I've had Kostrizer multiple times, and I feel this is simply better. Pours black with hints of ruby red in the body, but the ruby is more pronounced at the base. Chocolate and roasted coffee notes in the nose, with a more intense chocolate flavor with the first sip. A roasted bitterness lingers on the tongue, but complimented with the chocolate notes makes this a treat to chug. Coupled with the medium to light body and 4.5% abv, this is insanely drinkable. I haven't had nearly as many schwarzbiers as I have say, pilsners, but personally I would seek this out if you're a schwarzbier fan.
If you like Schwarzbier, give Sprecher Black Bavarian a try. Just won gold at World Beer Cup, an exceptional and consistent beer.
Just did a bit of research after seeing Eibauer for $3.99/6-pack on the shelves of a grocery liquidizer. Apparently these are being brewed by Minhas (Monroe WI) for Eurobevs, quasi a contract situation instead of actually importing the beer. If they were decent, that's great because most of what comes from Minhas is garbage.
Ugh yes -- they have a serious problem with a proprietary yeast that gives all their beers a real funky character. From that Eurobevs link: So how the heck did they contract with Minhas? Black Art, huh?
