If you’re talking about ratings relative to other styles, the craft lagers tend to get shafted. Any lager from Suarez/HF/Bierstadt etc deserves a much higher rating then they have since they’re at the top of their style.

As far as perception/hype/trade value I have a couple. Trading wise people don’t go crazy about Pliny and Heady like they used to and it’s a shame because I think they’re every bit as amazing as they were back in their heyday. I also think there are quite a few smaller/newer NEIPA focused breweries (Calusa, Southern Swells, Vitamin Sea, Resident Culture for example) that aren’t getting as much hype as the bigger guys but turning out stuff that’s just as good. Finally, I think Cycle is super underrated now that they’ve upped their production. It doesn’t really have any trade value anymore and they’re having a hard time selling out of their bottles but their beer (especially stouts) is still just as good as in the past

Now that September is here, I gotta give a shout out to Great Lakes Nosferatu

People don't get excited for red ales for sure, but this is one of the best tasting brews you can get IMO. I drink at least 12 bottles every single year for the Halloween season

Looking at my ratings for a brew of highest deviation to it's average score that I've had multiple times to stand by my opinion, I would have to go with Innis & Gunn Original Oak Aged Beer
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10272/12719/

This is an incredible scottish ale IMO and everyone I've introduced to it has agreed it is underrated even if it's not a style they go to. 3.78?!
Score of 85 is labeled as very good, so maybe it's not that the score is low but too many are higher and shouldn't be...

Thank you for validating my post. Heineken is so consistent. I think folks are missing out by writing off Heineken because they drank it in the green bottles.

BA ratings tend to be somewhat weird, and I think the reason is that the general public here tend to prefer IPAs and its variants, as they tend to prefer the american styles of classic styles such as porter, stout and their imperial forms.

I always felt baffled by the reviews ratings of many classic beers around the world, and even my early reviews were underwhelming to some beers I've had.

Now I try to judge my beers thinking in how they fit in their styles and how they compare within other beers in the same style.

In fact most reviews are just opinions without context and based only in the reviewers taste, when the review should consider what a beer promisses and what it brings to the table.

There are bad beers for sure, beers that have defects, contamination and problems with the recipe or production, but it is insane the low ratings some great beers get in some "reviews".
