Heading down to the outer banks in a week or so, wondering what are some of the better ipa's/dipa's that I should be on the lookout for while there. Have been reading the best ipa in nc thread but it seems like the majority of that stuff isn't distributed throughout the state. Looking for more new england style ipa's over west coast style. Looking for fruited sours as well. I've also heard some Westbrook brewing makes it up there, is this true? Any information is appreciated.

Best bet is to look at other threads here, especially the best IPA thread and go from there. You are going to be limited, obviously, to what is distro'd into that area. No clue, just prepare you self by reading up and go from there.

I'm not sure of any craft bottle shops in the OBX, so if you're only shoppin' at grocery stores or gas stations your options will be rather limited.

I would recommend any of Foothills' IPA/DIPAs, Westbrook if you can find it does see some distro in NC.

If you can find it fresh, grab yourself some Two Claw from Westbrook. Stuff is super tasty, annnnnd in cans. While you are at it, grab some Gose as well. Its not an IPA, but a great beer for the beach.

Trio is a good bottle shop in Kitty Hawk (obx) but if you want NE IPAs your best bet is to stop in Richmond on your way down. Depending on when you go you moght be able to get cans from The Veil and/or Triple Crossing, but at the very least you'll be able to fill crowlers or growlers at Triple Crossing.

LBC has released a couple nice fruited sours into distribution. You will be hard pressed to find any true New England style IPAs in distribution. Burial and Trophy are releasing hit and miss IPAs. You would be well served by the advice above to load up on Veil's hops and gose offerings, especially if you pass thru Richmond.

Thanks for the advice everyone..was gonna make a stop at burley oak on my way down and try for aslin on my way home. Richmond is a little out of the way, and I'm hoping to hit the veil's anniversary fest in August. I know nc has some great brewers, and after reading the best ipa/dipa in nc thread I thought the neipa's would be plentiful down there..how about any stouts/porters/barrel aged stuff that's worth bringing home and cellaring?

You're not too far from Young Veterans, and they distribute to grocery stores in the area. IIRC there's a bottle store in Moyock, and if not Big Ugly in Chesapeake's not far. Farm Fresh, Harris Teeter and Krogers in Tidewater all have decent "pick six" craft beer sections. O'Connor in Norfolk's another option.

Part of the problem is most of the good breweries are in the West to middle of the state (over to Raleigh/Durham) and not so much in the East. Plus the East is much more sparsely populated, especially outside of Wilmington, so not as many stores, etc. I don't know that Burial, NoDa, Zebulon, etc get past Raleigh.

Not really anything you are going to see on the shelf currently for BA stouts. If you run across some BA People's Porter, for the price (like <$8 for a bomber), its a fantastic pick up.

Just go to Trio and check out what's available/talk to an employee, they should have something that interests you but I wouldn't get your hopes up for legit NE IPAs. If they don't have anything at Trio, then there probably won't be anything that interests you anywhere else in the OBX (maybe Chips).

As far as Aslin, goes, just keep in mind that cans are usually released on Thursday and anything popular will more than likely sell out by Friday. You can get growler fills through the weekend though. Hours are pretty limited so make sure to check them as Aslin will probably be an hour or so detour on your way from OBX to NJ. IF you're taking 95 (as opposed to 13) then stopping in Richmond would be less of a detour than Aslin.

Agree with this, just stop in Trio, that's as good as it going to get in the outer banks. I usually grab things like Paradox and WW (gasp?) for fruited wilds. They had a few grimm and Westbrook regular goses I grabbed a few weeks ago, as well as OHB Event Horizon BA stout. There will not be a ton of standout IPA's but several decent options, and be sure to check the dates.

Someone mentioned Big Ugly which is located right off an exit that you have to pass on 168. They are hit or miss in general imo but have a really good NEIPA. If you do stop other places in Hampton Roads, there are plenty of other separate suggestions (please for the love of pete, don't get any young vets).

What's wrong with Young Veterans? I didn't find anything I disliked there at all. I'll say that's a good point on Big Ugly; when I was there they seemed to have an obsession with spicy beers, a combo even more unsuited than spicy chocolate if that's even possible. Their Magic Berlinerbus was good, though, but I admit my sour/cider/"chick beer" prejudice. Wish I had made it to Oozlefinch up on the Peninsula, but that's right on your way coming or going. Supposed to be on what was once Fort Monroe, and you can detour by where President Davis was confined while you're there.
