Good Morning Eager Eisbock Enablers and Remarkable Rauchbier Renegades, Happy New Beer Sunday!

Today is the 500th NBS get-together. For 9 1/2 years we've been sharing our thoughts with each other as we come together to enjoy and describe beers we try for the first time. Some of us have become friends through this long lived thread. But we all become neighbors and tasting partners when we join the Sunday fun that is NBS.

New Beer Sunday in many ways is not the same animal it was at first. Yet, in the important ways, it has remained the same during the time of malty, mattcrill, and now utopiajane and me, hopefully, will do the same. Pictures , and more of a free form feel, have improved things. Music we share has made it eve more personal. And the addition of so many new "faces" has given it more relevance, and a wider geographic reach. Folks, we had 136 replies last week.

I have a special beer or two for the occasion. Hope you do as well. Even better, I hope to share some old favorites with good friends later. Is there anything better than trying new beers on a beautiful day, or sharing fine beer with great friends? We will surely toast to another 500 weeks of our favorite Sunday new beer hangout.

Today is the day, and this is the place. Why not TRY a new beer today? TELL us about it. What do you taste, smell, and think? Do you LOVE it? Why? What do you love about it? Not your "cup of tea "(love mixing metaphors heheh)? What didn't you care for in the beer? Your review or a description that tells a story is greatly appreciated by all. Feel free to hopshot our heads (in homebrew fashion of course ) with linked review, pics, videos, and other world wide web wackiness to enhance our virtual tasting session.

Thanks to everyone for their participation, thus making NBS fresh, fun, and informative.

This Week's New Beer Sunday- Maredsous Tripel

    Breendonk-Puurs, Belgium
    Style- Triple
    11.2 fl oz
    10% abv
Purchased at Total Wine Kennesaw, GA

Good afternoon BAs. Well yesterday in the SEC things are starting to get interesting, LSU falls to MSU and Mizz falls to Indiana. Hell the Gators played BAMA for the 1st half. This game coming up for Georgia against Tennessee other than Florida is the one that concerns me the most. Not that Tennessee always plays the DAWGS tough but there are so many darn Tennessee fans at work.

Anyway I poured this beer in my Duval glass and produced a beautiful white thick head of both small and large bubbles. Looks like this beer is bottle conditioned with its endless upward flowing stream of champagne like fizz. Nice Dark red/brown copper color. As for the aroma I am having a tough time picking anything out but alcohol sweetness and yeast notes. I am not loving this beer with its sweet start and strong alcohol finish. I really had high hopes for this beer but I think you can do so much better in this category like the Chimay White and my favorite the Westmalle Tripel. Cheers

Good morning/afternoon, BAs and NBSers! I've got a little three-beer lineup planned for today's New Beer Sunday:

(I'll be cheating a bit with the Bigfoot.)

It warmed up quite a bit today here in SE CT; unfortunately, it was about 60F this morning (contrast that with 45F yesterday morning). Still, it's a slightly overcast, drizzly Fall day, and I'm excited for football. Time for a quick pizza lunch, and the first new beer of the day!

    Echt Kriekenbier (on my bottle).

Beautiful beer with an enticing aroma of cherry juice and pits, vinegar, and slight funk. It doesn't all translate perfectly to the tongue, which has little sourness and almost no funk. There's also an unpleasant metallic flavor that takes away from it just slightly. Still, a very enjoyable Kriek, and a nice choice to start off the afternoon on a lighter note.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/641/7183/?ba=Roguer
3.95 / +2.6% I'm surprised to walk out of that one with a +rDev, but the beer does look and smell amazing. That carried it a long way.

    Cheers, NBSers!

saved this new one for today. haven't an extensive familiarity with doppelbocks but this is umm, different?? initial sip had a slight spice thing that made the back of my throat tingle a bit (in a nice way). honestly didn't realize it was 11% until i went to look up the style & confirm it is considered a dbock. digging it.

    Greetings NBS'ers!
Its been a great week in the Seattle area - the weather is cooler but we're still getting our fair share of sunshine. We've been busy with work and taking care of the little one so its nice to have a Sunday full of football and new beers to try and share! We were hosting a BBQ today to catch the Seahawks game but our guests just cancelled (cold), so now i'm debating what to do... probably will end up firing up the grill anyway and enjoy these last few days of sun.

    My new beer today:

Thanks to @whyteboy003 for the opportunity to try this!

Funky Buddha - Barrel Aged Muy Bonita

Pours a very dark brown and it immediately starts forming a huge off-white head. The smell is amazing, like something I've not experienced before - it literally smells like fresh apple pie out of the oven with brown sugar and cinnamon accompanied by French vanilla ice cream. The taste, is very similar to the nose with an added finish of sweet bourbon. Its an absolutely outstanding beer - I am in love with it. Mouthfeel is good, but may be a bit overcarbonated for the complexity of its flavors and the beer's profile in general. Overall - what a fantastic beer, I hope the infection issues aren't too widespread and more people get to enjoy this the way I did and the way the brewer intended.

    Overall: 4.5
    Appearance: 4.5 Smell: 4.5 Taste: 4.75 Feel: 4.25

I have my work cut out for me as I will be trying Four new beers today since this is #500.

First up is Imperial Java Stout from Santa Fe Brewing. This is my first beer from New Mexico and it is delicious; reminds me of local favorite Central Waters Brewhouse Coffee Stout.

Huge notes of dark coffee, French latte, mocha, and hints of bitter bakers chocolate. Roasted malts and light caramel round it off. This was terrific to drink with my whole wheat pancakes, strawberries, and maple syrup this morning. A great way to kick off NBS!

Today we have an illustration of how a straightforward simple beer is like a haiku. When stripped of frills it becomes obvious if a sentiment is muddled. Maybe I just don’t love the style but this tasted like…nothing in particular?
Straight to Ale Sand Island Lighthouse Kölsch
    5.10% ABV
    Serving Type: Can
    Glassware: Pint glass
    [IMG]
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22655/71133/?ba=Roxie_B
So I looked up the style guide for it. The lack of head is normal for the style. Lack of discernable hop OR malt kind of threw me, but again - http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style06.php. Now what I got from that description (for the click shy " Neither malt nor hops prevail in the taste") was that I should taste a little bit of both. I got neither. Mostly just yeast and hay. Not terrible but not good either. The worst flaw to this one was the mouthfeel was a bit gritty; as though I had dropped a triscuit on a clean barn floor. Perhaps I am not supposed to be able to taste much of anything with a Kölsch? Not sure, this was my first.
    TL;DR:
Not bad - but not for me.

New uncommon California Common Beer Sunday

    Greetings NBSer's,
A warmer weekend led to my drinking up most of my wheat beers as we move into autumn here in SCMN. The leaves are both turning and dropping around these parts, no wasting time in preparing for what's ahead.

In MN we've had an explosion of smaller breweries showing up, but the regional boys continue to produce some interesting and tasty beers and today's NBS contribution is no exception. A big (8.2%) California Common with spruce tips and maple syrup. Quite nice and I'd say seasonal too with winter approaching.

    @garymuchow :wink:

My next beer is Herkulean Woods.

It has an interesting combination of ingredients with spruce tips and maple syrup; the name is perfect. It starts off with a big shot of hops and pine sap Some bitter grapefruit and other citrus hops. Bitterness is is big and bold, but settles a bit in the middle to allow the caramel malts and hints of maple syrup in. Finish is very piney and has a spruce/juniper (think gin) flavor.

Rated this one a bit below outstanding, but it is still a very nice and interesting beer. I expected it to be a bit sweeter and maltier, but the hops dominate. If you like pine, you'll love this!

    500th NBS - that's pretty damn cool!

Too bad I allowed myself to be talked into filling in for someone at work, so I won't be able to get into something until the evening (I'm also missing the Seahawk-Bronco rematch - just poor planning all around for me).

Once I get home and eat dinner, I will be popping the cork of a Victory Oak Horizontal courtesy of ShroudOfDoom. I expect it will be outstanding, and I'll post a review/description for those still awake by then.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A warm and sunny last day of summer here in the Fourth Corner, and I love it! A busy week here, as today is the last day of Bellingham Beer Week #3. There was a very nice event the other night focusing on women in the local beer scene. Ladies who own, manage, and work at our local breweries each brought a beer that they had a hand in making, and shared their thoughts on how they arrived at the final beer. I managed to get hit with a cold starting on Tuesday, so that cut back some my participation, but I still managed to get to our local Oktoberfest/beer fest. Several new beers were had, my favorite being an Imperial IPA from Central City, just over the border in Surrey, BC. There's a few events going on today, and I hope to get to a couple of them.

On this 500th NBS, I'm going to start off my fudging on the rules, just a bit. This beer was released on Tuesday, which was the breweries 19th birthday, so, I've clearly had several by now. Let's just pretend that I'm having it now, mmmkay? http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/701/138141/

One of the victims of the above mentioned cold, was a brewers night with Anderson Valley, and a show by a band I've really been wanting to for a couple of years now. I just had too high of a fever, and couldn't go, but here's a taste of what I missed:

I'll be venturing forth in a bit and will report back later with actual new beer.

Greetings to you alpha-acid aficionados and malt maniacs, hail to thee all Pilsner proponents and shandy shillers. It's time for another installment of my often antiquated but never duplicated NBS review. For NBS 500, I felt it only fitting to tackle a taut and sexy thriller: Schafly's Reserve.

    On the docket:

Schlafly Reserve Oak-aged Barleywine 2010 Vintage (cool!)

Poured hard into a Duvel snifter

Sight: Dark opaque brown with red hints when examined in sunlight. Tan head that when poured hard, develops into a nice inch-high cushion, but recedes to a thin film. Protein particles settle to the bottom. Should I have poured it with a softer hand? Lacing is one of icicles from the gutters and eaves of a house in Connecticut.

Smell: Much malt, bread and biscuit. I also smell a little booze, and dark fruit or raisin. Did they forget to put in hops?

Taste: More of the same I perceived from the smell. Malt, bread, biscuit… a touch of caramel? A touch of caramel. Some people mentioned butterscotch off a 2012 vintage, but I didn’t get it from its 2 year elder. Hops are only slightly evident, and show up late to the party. We’ll call this a dark-fruit malt bomb. Almost like a Belgian Quad… and I like it.

Mouthfeel: As a somm might say, “medium plus.” It’s coating and a bit of really tiny bubble, not Ian Anderson thick-as-a-brick.

Overall: I feel fortunate to have an aged beer, but not highly sought after, like others out there. I think I may have had my fill of English-style barleywine, but I still haven’t had Mother of All Storms… my white whale.

In honor of beer from 2010, how about a metal cover from 2010?

Jacob Leinenkugel's Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout.

Damn, this is really good! Super thick and chewy feel; big sweet dose of blackstrap molasses on the back-end. I can see why people really like this beer from a brewery that otherwise gets a lot of derision on here. It's a very, very solid beer all around, and it comes it a beautiful, understated package.

I love the english style brown ale. I know . . . . boring. Well not to me.
