Happy Sunday, gang! Hope you all are doing well, staying safe and enjoying some good beers today.
So my last few NBS' turned out to be excellent but apparently that ended today. Today's was ok. I had a few new beers today but chose to review this.

Appearance - Dark with a nice, tan head. Lots of carbonation.
    Aroma - Chocolate, roast, coffee
Taste - very sweet. Not getting much coconut. As it warms, taste is a bit muddled - lots of chocolate.
Mouthfeel - good carbonation but a bit thin.
Overall 3.5. Not bad, just not what was expected. Again, a bit muddled.
    cheers, all!

Glad you enjoyed that. There’s times I prefer Bare Hands’ stouts to their IPA’s, and that one was one of those occasions.

Good evening NBS and thanks @Snowcrash000 for the strt today. We are in the thows early spring here in WMass, that said its a bit of a strange vibe here in the happy valley with all the closures and delays. in contrast our #1 son lives in Taiwan and the approach there is societal and scientific. On a plus note we made it out to see the 1933 King Kong film on the big screen this afternoon, tonight the theater closes for 2 weeks. What a great film on the big screen.
Todays offering is from Loophole brewing in collaboration with Baronscourt from Ireland.
A delightful dry Irish stout with excellent feel and flavor.
    Cheers all
may the road rise to meet ewe

Poured from a 16 oz can produced 2 weeks ago into the test glass.
A - Deep mahogany color, hides the carbonation. Carrbonation however yileds a wonderful mocha cap, lacing is cirrus in format.
S - Char, cocoa powder, earthy and a touch of cigar wrap in there.
T - More of the light char, cocoa, a kiss of espresso, and again the earthy thread, classic hops I suspect.
M - Beautiful start, with fine semi sweet cocoa, then waves of dry bitterness roll on through. finish is quick and delightfully dry. Linger is char and cocoa powder in fine balance
O - A very good stout, in keeping with the classic drinkable flavor forward model, worth every effort to seek out and enjoy

    Greetings All:

Been a while since I posted on NBS. Some things have changed. I go back more than a decade in this forum, and I think my past participation fits with the new rules.

Today it's Luna Jo, an 'experimental' beer from Deschutes. A decent dark, coffee infused, lager. Not necessarily what I am looking for this time of year, but decent.

NOTE: The snow in the background is not what I am looking for this time of year either.

DUBCo John Hands. Fantastic pastry stout. Lasting head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge lightly tart/tangy raspberry jam, fruit skin/seeds, milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, roasted almonds, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy, silky, bready, and fairly sticky/chalky/tangy/tannic mouthfeel. Lightly increasing bitter/tart dryness; no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors. Very smooth/soft, minimal warming 11%. Fantastic balance of rich malts, jammy raspberry, chocolate, and almond flavors; with balancing earthy hops. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Really impressive! 4.23

Fremont Sky Kraken NE IPA, 5.5% ABV, 4.04 overall

Pours a hazy straw color with a thumb of ivory colored head. Average head retention & lacing

    S: Citrus, plus tropical fruits

T: Green melon, sour orange, plenty of dryness up front. More green melon & powdery orange as this warms. Finishes dry with papaya, green melon & orange notes

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, nicely balanced

Solid take on the style, very drinkable

Rookie attempt to add value to this thread......
The Brewing Project nails it again with Any Minute Now hazy IPA. Awesome rich look, super nice in the sun. Smell a little light until you taste it then it all comes together. The mouthfeel is like a milkshake IPA, smooth and rich. Overall a very solid hazy IPA that I'll buy again.

Toppling Goliath Fire, Skulls & Money IPA

Evening, BAs. My second new one today from Toppling Goliath pours a cloudy sunset orange with a fat finger of airy, yellowed head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving modest spots of soapy lacing.

White pepper stands out in the nose. There’s some restrained pineapple-mango-and-cream tropical fruit goodness below that, coupled with hints of weed, pine and cat pee. It’s very nice smelling, but you really need to stick your snout in there to pick it up.

It’s very peppery tasting — to the point where it steps on the tropical fruit flavors from the aroma. Mango, orange citrus, pineapple and some hard candy creams are what manage to peak through nonetheless. There’s also some green onion and light piney bitterness for balance.

The feel is on the heavy side of medium bodied with tight fizziness.

This is a well made IPA, but not a “wow” beer, IMO. Pseudo Sue, King Sue and Pompeii hit the right notes much more clearly for me. :beers:

Jumping into the low-cal IPA parade, this is my second, after Light Hearted from Bell’s. This is lower in calories and carbs than Light Hearted (100 vs 110 and 4 vs 8.7), and a bit higher in alcohol (4.0 vs 3.7 ABV).

I will say this looks the part, with the hazy sunshine color and soapy white head, and the aromas and taste (courtesy of the Citra/Simcoe) are also pleasing, with dank citrus notes (yes, dank in a 4% beer) prevalent.

But the mouthfeel is pretty watery, almost distractingly so, which is maybe attributable to the chicory root (all the way from Belgium!) used as a substitute for sugar.

This isn’t anywhere close to terrible, but given the choice of this or Light Hearted, I’d choose Light Hearted 100 times out of 100. Take that FWIW.

Astro Black, an Imperial Stout brewed in collaboration between English Brewery Northern Monk and American brewery Voodoo (12% ABV).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smell is rather unspectacular, with some faint, roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and an odd, floral/earthy accent reminiscent of cola.

Taste is a clear improvement on the nose, although the balance still feels a little off, with the lightly roasted and sweet caramel malt, chocolate and dark fruit notes of raisin and date dominating here, barely kept in check by some lighter dark, bitter coffee, licorice and earthy rye spice that feels more pleasant and less floral than in the nose, although a slight hint of that certain cola note remains. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted, caramel malt, coffee, chocolate and earthy spice lingwering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.

While the aroma initially is somewhat unpleasant here, the taste grew on me as this warmed. It's a bit too sweet for my personal taste with the caramel malt, chocolate and dark fruits clearly dominating, but being balanced somewhat nicely by some roasted, bitter notes, licorice and that certain rye spice, as well as lighter accents of coffee and floral/herbal hops. Given the involvement of Voodoo here, I certainly had higher expectations of this, although it's a rather solid Imperial Stout at the end of the day, that is just not quite to my personal taste and certainly nothing special as far as I'm concerned. Mouthfeel is good, but far away from the advertised "thick, luxurious" quality.

Pours a dark brown, edging to blackish, with a voluminous tan head that tracks to the glass like Velcro as you drink this beer.

The nose is earthy hops with some toffee notes, some bread, and the wood. Oh, the wood. The taste led by the toffee flavors, and there’s an earthiness present, but I keep coming back to that wood flavor that smooths this beer out into a crisp finish.

This reminds me SOOOOO much of the Schell’s caved-aged/barrel-aged lager, which is probably the highest compliment I can give this beer, because I loved that Schell’s beer. Thanks so much for sending this my way, Michael.

Rustic Whoa...Black Betty. Excellent dark lager. Nice head retention, spotty soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, and toasted dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and roasted earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; very smooth, cream, bready, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel. Very clean lagering, minimal yeasty notes. Very smooth/soft, no warmth of 5.5%. Great clean/rich malt showcase, balancing earthy hops. On point to style as expected of the brewery. No complaints. 4

Bought this for yucks, the few beers I've had with "Brett" yeast did nothing for me.
Color is a typical stout, dark brown, small tan head, a little lacing.
Snot locker gets the wine right away, overpowering.
Taste buds get the wine, very sour, not much else.
Thin and watery for a big stout, more carbonation than expected.
Wasn't expecting much and that's exactly what I got. I think I'll cleanse my taste buds with a bottle of Lagunitas Willetized!

Good afternoon fellow NBSers! Hoping that the social distancing and quarantining results in some new participants around these parts!

We took the kids out for a walk in the Cemetery down the street to get seem fresh air and run a bit of energy out of everyone.
It was chilly, but really quite lovely.

After we got back I decided to enjoy my first beer of the day while sitting in the yard. The fresh air and some quiet really was needed. As I worked on my review and enjoyed the beer a robin recently returned to the neighborhood joined me by the table and picked at the grass. As long as I sat pretty still, he just hung out and mostly ignored my presence.

First up for this weeks NBS is Genetic Drift - Peach from Speciation Artisan Ales a barrel aged wild farmhouse ale. This one checks in at a moderate 6.6% ABV.

It poured a cloudy, opaque peach flesh color. A small, but existent fizzy white head dissipates pretty quickly leaving no residual head. The aroma had strong notes of fresh peaches, peach flesh, with a moderate tartness immediately noticeable on the nose. Hints of mango and papaya come across in the background. Its very fruity overall - even the tartness is there , but it takes on a fruity character and the acidity doesn't really come through in the nose.

The taste follows the nose with that peach punch up front. Notes of peach, peach flesh, mango and papaya strike the palate then almost as quickly dance away leaving just a residual flavor of peach flesh and wheat with a mild acidic tartness. Its moderately tart, but not overly acidic as there is a subtle sweetness that cuts down on the acidity. The finish is actually quite mild with lingering notes of light malt and some wheat notes. For as much flavor as it starts out with, the finish ends kind of mildly and abruptly. The feel is light and bright. It is moderately tart - not producing a full on pucker but more like a lip smacking tartness. Again, there is a dry finish.

This is not only a new beer to me, but a new brewery, as Ive never had anything from Speciation Artisan Ales. This was quite lovely and if I get the chance to pick up more of their offerings I won't hesitate.

As I finished off the beer and headed inside, I noticed that the giant old lilac bush in the corner of the yard had gotten its buds. Gave me some renewed hope that spring and a new dawn is around the corner.
