    Séance, a rye imperial stout aged in bourbon and peated whiskey barrels. Collaboration between Ravenna Brewing, Bottleworks & Full Throttle Bottles. Compliments of @kemoarps in BIF #16. ABV is 12%

    Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours jet black with little head. The nose is dark chocolate, toffee, bourbon, peat smoke, plums, raisins, some roasted malts, vanilla, and a bit of cherries. Very nice.

    The taste is wonderful. The peated whisky comes through a lot more here. Lagavulin perhaps? Dark chocolate, burnt toffee, charred wood from a campfire, coffee grounds, tobacco, chalk, earthy note, dirt, vanilla, coconut, plums, and blackberries. Really nice mixture of sweet and bitter. The rye spice comes through nicely, especially on the back end.

    Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. The alcohol is noticeable, but not burning. Overall, a great rye stout.

    7% New England style IPA

    Poured from a twelve ounce can, the body pours a hazy yellow with a good, fluffy initial head. Good lacing throughout the tasting.

    Aroma is the familiar yet still enticing Citra citrus. Taste lowers the citrusy fruit nose and adds a light malty backbone. True to style, there is little hop bitterness - maybe a light touch at finish.

    Good mouthfeel with pleasant softness. Carbonation is strong as even the most passive pour yields a big head. Patience helps here so enjoy the citrus nose.

    An easy drinker that masks the ABV well.

    Revolution Red Skull Ale, Imperial Red, 8.8% ABV; 4.23 overall

    Pours an effervescent & slightly hazed Auburn with one finger of tight sandy colored head. Above average head retention & lacing

    S: Bready, piney, toasty

    T: Follows the nose, dry, cakey up front, some herbal hops as well. Plenty of pineyness, a little caramel & dryness, plus toastyness as this beer warms up. Finishes dry, piney, with a little caramel & grapefruit

    MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, good balance

    Potent Red Ale. but plenty easy to drink

    Excellent clear, golden yellow body; moderate carbonation visible; relatively thin head, white and frothy. Malty nose with a bit of dank weediness in the background. Delicious flavor; bready, biscuit-like malt base; herbaceous herbal note; moderate hop bitterness. Medium-light body; crisp; gently dry overall.

    A delightful, balanced and decently complex west coast styled India pale ale.

    ...had a fine Thanksgiving meal in Parker, CO early this afternoon at my sister- and brother-in-laws place...she also gave me two old laptops (Win XP and Win 7) to wipe their hard drives and take to an electronic recycling facility...I'm glad I still had a drive enclosure that supports the old SATA technology...so, wiping and deleting partitions, formatting the drives, and then wiping them again while watching Thursday Night Football...

    Dark brown body, clear although it looks nearly black and opaque in the glass; nice semi-creamy head, khaki colored. Rich, roasted grain aroma; earthy sweetness; a touch of vanilla. Nice dark lager flavor; bitter chocolate with a bit of white chocolate and vanilla sweetness; generally light bitterness. Medium-heavy body; lager smooth.

    This is what I would consider a crushable Baltic porter. A little thin overall yet still brimming with dark grain goodness.

    Boulevard/Firestone Walker BA Wheat Wine, 9.9% ABV; 4.21 overall

    Pours an effervescent & not so clear hazel with a pinky of tan head. Minimal head retention & lacing. Beer brightened up after the initial pour

    S: Dark fruit & Sherry, a little peach

    T: Follows the nose, hints of Bourbon & Oak up front. Leafy hops, barrel dryness, a touch of persimmon, peach, figgy notes, raisins & Sherry as this beer warms through, hints of red grapes& a little woody hop as well. Finishes with Sherry, candied oranges, figs & dryness, just a kiss of booze warmth

    MF: Medium body, low carbonation, warming

    A super solid collab that hits about all the right notes, but a sipper for sure. Just got more complex as it warmed through

    Happy Thanksgiving Day / Weekend / Sunday Beer Advocates!

    Starting the weekend with this beer won the FOBAB 2022 Gold Medal (and also a Bronze at GABF), the former in the Specialty Strong Porter Stout category. I sent a request to add the beer notes and update the ABV via the update tabs in BA. This is the first beer I am rating from this brewery, or from their collaborative partner J W Wakefield.

    Bottle Notes:
    Received courtesy of the Illinois Craft Guild for volunteering during the final day of FOBAB. Refrigerated upon bringing home on November 5th.

    Bottled in June 2022, 13.0% ABV, 16.9 oz. Brewed in symbiosis with J. Wakefield Brewing. Brewed by Cerebral Brewing, Denver Colorado (though FOBAB notes indicate this was brewed at their facility in Aurora, Colorado.

    Barrel aged stout with fuego. Imperial Stout aged 32 months in Woodford Reserve chocolate malted rye bourbon barrels. Conditioned on Wood-Fired Guajillo and Chipolte Peppers, Filipino Cacao Nibs, and Mayan Vanilla Beans. Store cold, drink fresh.

    Appearance:
    Poured the first half of the bottle into a thin glass snifter. Pours really thick Texas crude oil texture, very dark tan thin minimal creamy head which dissipates without a trace less than 1 minute in. Carbonation persistent the first few minutes. 4.5

    Aroma:
    Getting a strong vanilla off the bat, I enjoy the aroma despite being hit or miss in terms of my like of vanilla in stouts. After a few minutes of warming, getting a really nice blend of chili peppers and cocoa, cocoa grabbing the reins several minutes in as I let this warm to a proper refrigeration. 4.5

    Taste:
    First sips are very sweet, then getting the chili peppers and Woodford Reserve, the latter strong and smooth, to keep the proceedings within reason. My favorite aspect of this offering is the wonderful showcase of the Woodford Reserve barrel, the 32 months longer than most stouts have the benefit of soaking up the barrel and it pays off tremendously if you are patient enough to let this warm to a proper temperature (I recommend 15-20 minutes after refrigeration, perhaps less direct from a cellar). The stout, cocoa and vanilla support well, really enjoying the blend at proper temperature. 4.75

    Mouthfeel:
    This is the second most thick stout I can recall by memory drinking, very thick on the pour and texture throughout. After letting this sit for 20 minutes before taking a deeper dive, the initial strong sweet vibes turned into a strong showcase for the Woodfood Reserve, and the chili peppers beating into submission the cocoa and the traces of vanilla. The dulling of the strong sweetness in the taste is a welcome development for my personal preference. The nose continues to trick you while drinking warm, as the strong vanilla and cocoa vibes continue unabated. Negligible carbonation persists throughout, beer drinks much stronger than the 13% ABV, though the bourbon dominance may be playing tricks on my mind. Thoroughly an enjoyable and unique body and experience. 5.0

    Overall: This beer is the real McCoy. Tricked by aroma, this is no sweet kids cereal stout, but rather a expertly aged and blended offering. I don't seek "pastry stouts" these days, but glad I gave this one a go, as it brings the best in bourbon flavors, constrained but still impactful and enjoyable complements of sweetness to to glass, and a wonderful showcase of Woodford Reserve, one of my favorite bourbons back when I was a regular drinker. If those criteria are compelling to you, grab this if if you get a chance. Definitely want to seek out more Cerebral offerings and J. Wakefield styles I can enjoy. Well deserved Festival Medals for this World Class offering. 5.0

    Not sure if this is getting wide distribution, but hopefully helpful for BAs to consider these two breweries and or the benefits for extended barrel aging for future potential offerings. My planned beer for tomorrow is an annual BA release from a brewery I've seen here over the years but only come to experience the past 1 plus years in Chicago after they started dropping here. Stay tuned and enjoy this tune while digesting your turkey and beer.

    Hoyne - Dark Matter

    16oz can served in a big snifter. Dated AUG102022. In-laws brought it back from Victoria a couple months ago.

    Pours basically black with a small head (I would have thought it was a schwartzbier if BA didn't tell me it was a brown ale). Smell is roasty, coffee, chocolatey.

    Taste is similar, with a bit of a grainy sweetness. Tons of roast, maybe some anise, comes across with a substantial amount of a dark roast coffee.

    Mouthfeel is medium to light. Overall, it's pretty good and pretty interesting, doesn't really fall into the brown ale category for me, but doesn't clearly fall into other categories either.

    Hitachino Dai Dai Ale.

    This is an American IPA purchased at the local supermarket for a bit over 3€.

    Poured into the Guinness pint leaving a three inches white head. It’s a standard 330ml elegant bottle and an ABV of just 6%.

    Light amber color, almost orange.

    Smell is orange/orange peel, slight piney notes. A bit floral.

    The taste follow the nose, orange, herbal, a bit of lingering bitterness. Tasty, not overly sweet, either.

    Mouthfeel is fairly smooth with low carbonation.

    Overall: this is a great IPA from the Japanese brewery. I’ve had three from them at this point but I’d love to seek out more if possible.
    Compared to other classic American IPA; this is not as hoppy but it’s their own take on the style and it’s a win for me.

    Something to be thankful for - generosity

    NBW was started early this week as part of an extended Thanksgiving long weekend. I figured it would be appropriate for me to give thanks that I have a new beer that was gifted to me by a very generous benefactor: Casey Pils.

    “German-style Pilsner

    Our Pils is inspired by the delicate versions of the style produced in South Germany. We utilize a double decoction mash with 100% Bohemian Pilsner malt for a complex mouthfeel and then hop the brew with a mix of Czech Saaz and Hallertau Mittelfruh.”

    There is an interesting list of ingredients there. The brewer chose to use Bohemian Pilsner malt vs. a German Pilsner malt (e.g., Weyermann) and conducted a double decoction which is more of a Czech style process, it is much more prevalent in Germany to conduct a step mash (no decoction). There is a mix of Czech (Saaz) and German (Hallertau Mittelfruh) hops.

    Well, let’s see how this mix of ingredients and process results in a German-style Pilsner.

    Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance

    Straw yellow with a big white head.

    Aroma

    There is a notable aroma that is a combination of bready malt and herbal/spicy hop aroma.

    Taste

    The flavor favors the rich malty flavor but there is enough herbal/spicy hop flavor to provide balance. There is a firm bitterness.

    Mouthfeel

    Light - medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall

    This beer is very good. The flavor of the beer is towards the malty side but as a discussed above there is a pleasant herbal/spicy flavor to provide some balance to this beer.

    Given the above discussion of Czech vs. German ingredients/process: is this beer a German Pilsner or a Bohemian (Czech) Pilsner? There is more depth of maltiness to this beer than would be found in a typical German brewed Pilsner but the beer does have a crispness aspect that I associate with a German Pilsner. I suppose a coin flip is needed here?

    [​IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 11/08/22. Pours a hazy yellow orange with a finger plus sticky off white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.75

    Aroma is mango, mandarin, papaya, apricot, and some grapefruit rind. 4.25

    Taste follows mango, papaya, mandarin, apricot, and white grapefruit in the bold lingering finish. 4.25

    Mouthfeel is a little bigger than average, maybe a tad dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 7.9% big flavor but excellent drinkability. 4.5

    Overall this is pretty impressive, I will have know issues finishing this 4 pack. Welcome to NH Tilted Barn. 4.25 Cheers all and please roll out some serious pages!

    Good morning, Weekenders! I'm going to spend a few moments (and posts) catching up on the new beers I've enjoyed so far. I'm going to tag @MacMalt only once, as he's been responsible for the majority of these, and I don't want the entirety of his notifications to be me tagging him. :wink:

    First up: More Boos, a 12.6% ABV imperial pumpkin ale with a plethora of pumpkin spices (according to the BA database, China cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, mace, cloves, brown sugar, and Madagascar Vanilla beans).

    This was really enjoyable. The spices were well balanced. I didn't get much pumpkin, honestly, so much as the pumpkin spice, but I'd say that's par for the course over the last decade of pumpkin beers.

    Incredible drinkability for the sky high ABV.

    I really enjoyed this one, but I think I rated it appropriately for me. My partner was aligned here, too. Granted, pumpkin spice ales (and any dry spices in beer) often reach a tipping point with me very quickly. This one didn't quite, thankfully.

    My second new beer of the weekend was, appropriately, the barrel aged version of More Boos:

    I was really hoping that the whiskey barrel would elevate this one above the base beer. I was quite excited, honestly. (One of my favorite pumpkin spice beers is Two Roads' Roadsmary's Baby, which is a rum BA imperial pumpkin stout - and I don't even like rum!)

    Sadly, it was a let down, as the whiskey barrel comes across mildly sour, and tends to drown out the pumpkin spices - which, again, in the base beer weren't particularly strong. A good thing in the base beer, but a detriment in this version.

    Did I enjoy it? Oh, definitely! But I did feel it was a step back. My partner couldn't finish hers; she gave up after three sips due to the mild sourness (more for me!).

    Again, definitely not in any way a bad beer - at least for me - but definitely a let down based on my expectations and having the base beer first.

    My third new beer of the weekend was a lighter offering I asked my partner to pick up (thank goodness for alcohol delivery!) so that we could day drink throughout Thanksgiving food prep: Ol' Factory Pils by Two Roads, a beer that has somehow escaped my attention throughout all my years in CT.

    I had a couple of these, and really enjoyed them. It's definitely bordering on IPL territory; it's a dry-hopped pilsner, but it leans heavily on the hops, and far less so on the malt base.

    While I notice the pilsner malt pretty easily, otherwise it's really missing the bready base I expected. Hop expression was really nice, and it's quite drinkable, so overall this is a darn tasty beer. I wouldn't go for it if I specifically wanted a pilsner ( @JackHorzempa if you've had this one, I'd love to hear your take!), but if I wanted a crisp, hoppy lager that isn't quite an IPL, this definitely gets the job done.

    For my final new beer of Thanksgiving day, I broke out a cellar gem I'd been saving: Drie Fonteinen Framboos. This beer should require no additional introduction. :wink:

    Damn, this is nice. It's moderately sour, but the emphasis is definitely more on the earthy and slightly cheesy funk. Raspberries are present but never overwhelm.

    This isn't as delicate as my favorite lambics (fruited or otherwise), but it's excellent. I was quite surprised to actually clock in +rDev, given this beer's reputation, but it's well-earned.

    Aaaaaand to finally catch up, here's this morning's new beer: Call me Chris, a 13.5% ABV imperial stout aged in both Tennessee whiskey and rye whiskey barrels.

    This is an excellent BA IS, with nuance, depth, and complexity. It lacks the richness of flavor and fullness of mouthfeel that really set apart the world class takes on the style (Bourbon County, Primordial Unity), but if it's not quite the 5-tool player of the best-of-the-best, it's at least playing in the same league.

    Really wonderful flavor expression. Bitterness is moderate but doesn't really stray into RIS territory. Barrel influence is lovely as well. Fantastic beer.

    [​IMG] Poured into a 20 tulip glass bottled on 9/7/22. Pours midnight black with a 2 finger mocha head that leaves some thin streaks of lace, with excellent retention. 4.75

    Aroma is dry coffee grounds, oaked vanilla, toffee, caramel, deep dark chocolate, and smoky bourdon pretty amazing. 4.75

    Taste follows roasty coffee, vanilla, toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, and bourbon leaves your palate begging for more! 5

    Mouthfeel is rather big, maybe a little dry but it is a coffee stout, soft carbonation slightly creamy, and at 13.2% it is a sipper, but because of how complex it is it is difficult to just sip. 4.75

    Overall Wow this is one of the best stouts I have ever had for sure. It should be for the cost, but it is pretty insane! 4.75

    The short answer: no, I have not tasted this beer.

    Longer answer:

    I have thought about trying this beer but I am aware that American hops (do you know what variety(s)?) are used as part of the dry hop of this beer. I am not averse to Pilsners being dry hopped (I dry hop the Pilsners I make) but my preference is that they be dry hopped using European hops (e.g., noble hops).
