    Hey what's going on folks?

I am filled with merriment of many accomplishments this busy weekend. Taking it easy, but boy i am thirsty of late and found quite a bit of Oktoberfest leftovers and goodies to dive into.

What's new for our hero today?

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass.

Beautiful looking lager, with a brass gold and chestnut hued clarity for the body appearance, maybe even a faint touch of red squeaking out in the darker areas. Capped with a great looking cream top, nice white not yellowed and not bright bleach like either. This 2 finger top sits nicely with slow settling and some good spider legs of lacing too.

Aroma seems different. A very noticeable ester of banana getting into more of a hefe clove quality. Clean, with light touches of crisp toffee also. The banana seems misplaced but not in a bad way at least.

Palate continues more of this banana flavor but still provides fest character. Clean mid palate, quite fruity actually somewhat with a toffee mix and almost banana and berry sweetness. Mild sensing hop, a bit of hinting pasty sticky lager flavor just by a hair in the finish. Mild sense of spicy herbal classic hop in the mix.

Interesting festbier, kind of sticks out uniquely, but the fruity estery nature of it I find just a hair distracting.

#2, also from @BBThunderbolt, I don’t get to try many winter warmers, so I’m excited to dive into this.

This beer pours a deep mahogany brown, and it’s nearly clear and sports a sudsy light tan head that provides ample lacing. The nose is rich caramel and some stone fruit, specifically black cherries.

The taste definitely has black cherry flavor, but it’s the rich caramel that edges toward butterscotch that makes this beer so delicious - I’d love to have a 6er of this to age to see how it evolves, because it’s really fresh now (canned 10/4/21) and I’d love to see where it goes at 6 months and a year.

First new beer for today is a mystery beer sent to me by @Roguer through the most recent BIF. Turns out it is Persist from Tree House. Poured at fridge temp. Pours black with a little bit of brown head.

Nose: marshmallow, milk chocolate, vanilla, lactose, brown sugar, and maybe a hint of coffee. Graham cracker - I almost get a S'mores feel to it. I'm not getting much barrel. Vanilla notes start to increase as it warms a bit. This is a real beauty to smell - I almost don't want to take a sip.

Taste: OK, this is big. Huge flavors here. Bourbon here. Roasty malts mixed with sweet brown sugar and a good amount of maple syrup. Vanilla, marshmallow, and lots of dark fruit. Tons of milk chocolate. This is just a joy to drink - sweet all the way. No bitterness on the aftertaste. Some might think it's a bit too sweet (makes me think maple syrup even more), but I'm just fine with the sweetness level.

Overall: First, the mouthfeel is insane on this. Thick and almost syrupy. Viscous. Overall, an absolutely lovely stout with some additions. Maple!! Thanks to Andrew for this fun one!

The Veil Brewing Co. has not been represented in Vermont, 'til now!
Thorn is a lager, coming in at 5% abv.
    A bit pricey...and with a cardboard 4-pack holder no less...

    16 ounce can.
    Canned on 09/23/21.

Moderate pour yields a 3/4 inch pure white head over a bright, light golden body with lacing. Nose of hay, straw, and wheat. Taste is hoppy for the style, nicely balanced and super quaffable. A tiny bit sweet in the middle and the finish is pretty dry, and ever so slightly bitter. Very good feel and overall, a nice surprise from Richmond, VA.
    Cheers to Matt and crew!

Finally getting back to a new beer. My stomach hasn't been great, and my partner has had a rough stomach bug all day; I suspect we're all a little sick. But my palate is fine, and after a ton of water, I think I'll give another new beer or two a go!

This is UPA (Upper Peninsula Ale), a Mosaic-hopped APA from Upper Hand, sent my way by @foundersasap in the most recent BIF.

Summary: this is really nice! The interplay of Mosaic and a moderately toasty malt base results in a profile that I don't think I've ever had before - at least, not exactly. Quite floral, moderately dank on the nose (but not the palate - oh, Mosaic, you elusive and chimeric beast you!), with notes of candied orange, toast, melon, and caramel.

I like this one quite a bit. It stands out, which by itself is nice, but more importantly it's also very tasty.

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Late again this week. Had to work yesterday and today. sorry I'm so late in checking into the virtual new beer bar. I'll just cut to the chase with my new beer, and it's the first review of it here.
Get me The Manager - The Brewing Projekt - Stout-Imperial (pumpkin beer) - 10.3% ABV

Now why do I say it's a pumpkin beer after the Imperial Stout? Well, with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and star anise, it's a pumpkin spice beer. If you don't like pumpkin spice, this isn't for you at all.

I am a fan of it - when done right, and this is.

This is a beautiful pouring beer. It pours pitch black. There's almost a nitro look to it, when the head forms, and it's a tick boy. The head is 3 finger, and tan. The head is very frothy, and fluffy looking. The bubbles are quite small. The retention is damn good, and there's a nice ring of lacing that clings to the glass.
The nose is, well, for a better word, pumpkin spice. There's a good amount of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in it. Very pleasing.
Taste - At first I get a nice malt, biscuit flavor. Then the spices kick in, and hard, but not crazy, if that makes sense. The cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and star anise are powerful, but not unbalanced. They punch, but not overboard.
The body is good. Maybe slightly thin for the ABV, but it's not really very thin. The feeling from the spices lingers in my throat. Not like a resin feeling from a hoppy IPA, but it's there.
This is quite interesting, and I do like it.

Ok, I'm not sure I'll be back with another new one tonight. Maybe? If not, see you all at this bar next weekend.

Quite a head difference. I wonder if it's another case of carbonation issues with B United's canning.

Crisp fall day here meant my grandson and I took a long walk on the palatial grounds for the first time since mosquitos started up... I had forgotten that our quiet walks in the woods actually feature non-stop nature commentary from the young 'un, but it is pretty awesome.

Yeah, about time I tried this beer:

I can't say much that hasn't been said, so cutting to the chase this is a very good RIS deserving of the rating and I will pretty much become another duck on the row...quack. What I find surprising is the chocolate. Now this is fresh and I look forward to letting this age, but right now I am getting a significant chocolate flavor, that seems sweet at first but as the coffee and roasted malt takes over, the sweet sensation fades to a hefty but short-lived combo bite of char, espresso, acridity, and some bitterness. Coffee acridity and char lingers a little,, but pleasantly. Even young, no alcohol beyond a pleasant warmth. I'd call it medium body, somewhat creamy, just enough carbonation to hold it up. Glad I have five more to play with later, anticipating this to be even better with some time.

In my experience (and I've had a lot of Narwhal ... don't look it up on Untappd :grimacing: ), that chocolate note becomes more pronounced as it ages, while the hops fade a bit. It's one of my favorite aspects of the beer, and it never becomes overly sweet. About a year of age is perfect for me with Narwhal.

A new offering from The Veil Brewing Co.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/41018/572901/

    16 ounce can.
    Canned 09/23/21.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a nearly one inch white over a bright golden body with scant lacing.Bubbles are on the larger size causing head to dissipate rather quickly.
Nose of slight malt, biscuit, and lager yeast.
Taste is slightly bitter with a bit of spice and just a tad of sweetness.
Good feel and overall, a more than decent lager from Richmond, VA.
    Cheers!

Next new beer was another mystery beer from BIF #14, this time from @JayORear! Lake Haze #19 from Wallenpaupack Brewing. Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice murky orange with white head.

Nose: Wheat, citrus peel, floral notes, tropical fruit. Mango and pineapple mostly. Hoppy note is there, but not dominant on the nose.

Taste: First taste is honey. This is very fruit forward and very little in the way of hops. Almost no bitterness at all. Sweet. A bit of toffee, but a lot of pineapple, papaya, mango notes. Floral notes, along with a candy sweetness. A bit of spice. Gosh, this almost reminds me more of a Belgian Tripel given the malt sweetness.

Overall: This is lovely. I keep taking sips and thinking "damn this is good!".

Another Upper Hand brew from @foundersasap , this time Upper Hand IPA. Let's see how this one stacks up to the little brother, UPA.

This is a good IPA: piney, resinous, and dank. It's less interesting and original, though, than UPA; and there isn't as much malt expression. That much is fair: it's an IPA, after all. But overall, while this is a fine and crisp IPA, it's simply not as interesting.

I will definitely enjoy all 12 ounces, however. :grinning:

It's OK but there are better beers from this brewery.

Watching the Seahawks against the hated Steelers. I was a 13 year old Raider fan when the immaculate reception happened in 1972 and a 46 year old Seahawks fan when the refs gave the Super Bowl to Pittsburgh in 2005. I call them the "Stealers.". Stop the steal indeed.

Yet another from @JayORear - this time an English barleywine from Horus and Timber Ales. Vanilla Maris - an English barleywine aged on vanilla beans. Poured at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown - almost black. Almost no head. This is VERY dark for an English barleywine.

Nose: The first wave of flavors is dark and dried fruit - prunes and dates. Vanilla-soaked figs quickly follow. Holy crap is this amazing on the nose. A light toffee and lots of chocolate come through. A slightly spicy aroma, along with more vanilla! This is definitely a vanilla bomb. Probably not one to age - drink now! A slightly sugary sweet note comes through as well.

Tatse: Vanilla! Wow - this is extremely vanilla forward. The alcohol definitely makes an appearance. Burnt toffee, milk chocolate, and dried fruit are all there. A bit of port, and a leathery taste starts to come through. This is just so good and smooth. The flavors are not incredibly complex, but they definitely mingle nicely. I could easily drink this every day!

Mouthfeel and overall: The mouthfeel is much creamier than a typical English barleywine. This is almost stout like. Maybe the vanilla is to blame, but it's awesome! Overall, a stunning beer and a great collaboration.

How did the packaging dates compare?

And I wonder if there was a different showing of head retention from can to bottle because of the can? @zid

Also, too bad you couldn't have added the Original into the comparison -- closer in ABV to the Fest, so maybe even more palate muddling.

    Happy Sunday BA!

This weekend I'm enjoying Moderne Dansk from Jester King. They describe the beer as,
    [IMG]

After uncapping I was surprised to find a cork underneath the bottle cap -- I'm guessing due to this one being more heavily carbonated than most of their offerings.

Gorgeous looking beer. Pours a deep blend of ruby and purple with a thin lavender head that dissipates over a few minutes, leaving moderate lacing. The nose is intense tart cherries with a sharp acidity. The palate follows the nose, and again the tart cherry is very intense here. I've never had the pleasure of enjoying Stevnsbær cherries, but some of its unique characteristics absolutely come through on the palate. Mouthfeel is light, sharp, and effervescent. I'm enjoying this one more as it warms where the acidic and tart finish is toned down slightly allowing the unique cherry flavors from the Stevnsbær cherries to shine through better.

    Look: 4.5, Smell: 4.0, Taste: 4.5, Feel: 4.0, Overall: 4.25 -5.5% rDev
