Not even remotely similar other than they are ales, and Belgian.

The yeast component is the primary difference, which is strongly evident in Saisons and wildly varies in aroma and flavors compared to tripels among other things.

It has been mentioned a number of times: the principle difference between a Saison and a Tripel is the type of flavors/aromas produced by the varying yeast strains.

A Trappist yeast strain (fermented warm) will produce a unique and interesting mix of esters (fruity flavors) and phenols (spicy flavors). A Saison yeast strain will also produce esters and phenols but they will of a different character.

The other distinguishing feature of a Saison is that it should be very dry with a final gravity much less than 1.010. A Tripel will not be as dry with a final gravity typically around 1.010 – 1.012. This dryness/mouthfeel difference is very noticeable.

One other comment (which has previously been mentioned) is that there is a tremendous amount of variation in Saisons: varying alcohol strength, variations on whether spices are used or not, variations on whether other yeast strains are used along with the Saison yeast strain (e.g., Brett) or not, and on and on and on. When it comes to the Tripel style there is not nearly as much variation.

    Cheers!

Saison = quite dry, lower alc., intense carbonation, usually more cloudy
Tripel: Richer, rounder, sweeter, more alc., more toward candy taste

Thank you for all the help and responses. Read through all of them and I have a much better understanding now. I'll be doing a tasting of the two tomorrow and wanted to get a good idea for what to look out for in the two styles. Cheers!

I absolutely love tripels one of my favorite styles. There is a lot variety in them too, but Sai sons truly go all crazy places. Best thing is to try many. Enjoy!
