A good idea by @guajolote and in put use in the Northwest forum is a thread that we can direct people to, or they can discover for themselves frequently asked questions on where to visit in our fine beer state. I am going to try and be a little bit more expansive and include the whole state and not just MSP. Of course constructive criticism is welcome on how to improve the information, format, additions, etc.

Universally accepted brewpubs and taprooms that are must visits (Minneapolis/St. Paul)
    Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery
    Surly Brewing Company
    Dangerous Man Brewing
    Indeed Brewing Company

Other brewpubs and taprooms (Minneapolis/St. Paul) Listed in alphabetic order
    NE Minneapolis
    56 Brewing
    612 Brew
    Bauhaus Brew Labs
    Fair State Brewing Cooperative
    Sociable Cider Werks

    Northern Minneapolis area
    Bent Brewstillery
    Boom Island Brewing
    Insight Brewing
Northgate Brewing *current address listed on BA is incorrect*

Downtown Minneapolis area, Washington Avenue, Target Field, etc.
    Day Block Brewing Company
    Fulton Beer
    Sisyphus Brewing
    Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery
    The Freehouse

Southern Minneapolis area, Uptown, Lake St., Longfellow, etc.
    Eastlake Craft Brewery
    Harriet Brewing
    Herkimer Pub and Brewery
    LynLake Brewery
    Northbound Brewpub

End of part 1. Wanted to get this posted before I screwed something up and lost my work. If corrections need to be made, or a better way to format this, please let me know. I will do St. Paul and the suburbs a little latter, and then Greater Minnesota. Eventually adding preferred stores and bars.

Oddly enough, there are a good number of people who join this site (Beer Advocate) from outside of Minnesota. Once they've joined, they will routinely query or 'ping' Midwest forum users prior to undertaking a 'google search'.

Perhaps "Generally accepted" would be more accurate phrasing for that first category.

If it were up to me, I'd swap out Indeed for Fair State.

I don't have any issue with the order they're listed. I'm saying that deeming a list of four breweries "universally accepted" is misleading to visitors.

Actually really glad to see this thread get started.

Im heading up to Southern MN to visit my girlfriends family 11-19 and will be there through 11-22. I don't see myself making it up to the cities due to activities already planned, but Id love to get some advice on what Owatonna and Rochester have to offer, brewery/bar/bottle wise. Im not limited to just these cities, I can travel a little bit if needed. Was just curious if there was a general area/spot around this area. I know August Schell is relatively near by in New Ulm ( not sure if this is worth checking out or not ).

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. Im not very familiar with MN at all! Nice to see this thread will include the entire state.

I agree that would be a better choice of words. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to call me on it and disagree. I see a few things that need to change on the next revision but I have a lot of information to compile and post in this thread first. And then hopefully it will be easier to cut and paste in a future update with a well thought out plan on how it should be laid out.

Forager and Grand Rounds are two Rochester places that I enjoyed recently. Both are worth checking out. There is also LTS that just opened, but I haven't heard a thing about them. Whistle Binkies would be a good beer bar choice.

Thanks for posting this. I'll be in MSP in mid-December to attend my son's graduation from MCAD, so I'll be hitting the stores/breweries.

10K (and anything else that might open in Anoka) is straight up Suburbs, Hammerheart could go either way IMO.

To expand on my last post. Shakopee and Excelsior (especially) are far less suburban than Anoka.

    Target Field to...
    Excelsior Brewing (Excelsior): 18-19 miles
    10K Brewing (Anoka): ~21 miles
    Badger Hill Brewing: 21.5 - 22.5 miles

I'd say they're all in the same ballpark.

Excellent discussion as I want this to have community input instead of one man's opinion. I was also torn on Badger Hill. To me Excelsior is very suburban while Shakopee is somewhat less so because they are on the south side of the river as well as away from Burnsville and Eagan which I consider suburbs. I am not at all familiar with Anoka.

Meh, distance doesn't matter, the fact is that Anoka is essentially a second second ring Minneapolis Suburb (big post WWII growth), while the others (especially Shakopee) are tied into the metro from more recent urban sprawl. It really doesn't matter to me, just putting my old Geography of the Twin Cities from college to use.

I think I am going to move Hammerheart and Badger Hill in the next revision. Still undecided on Excelsior.

    Liquor Stores- Minneapolis

    Elevated Beer Wine & Spirits
    Falls Liquor
France 44 Wines & Spirits Will ship beer nationwide
    Lake Wine & Spirits
    South Lyndale Liquors
    Stinson Wine, Beer and Spirits
Surdyk's Controversial listing as many local BA's, myself included, boycott this place for past pricing of Surly Darkness
    Zipp's Liquors

    Liquor Stores- Saint Paul

    1st Grand Avenue Liquors
    Big Top Wine & Spirits
    Merwin Liquors- Falcon Heights
The Wine Thief & Ale Jail
    Thomas Liquors & Fine Wines

This list is a little bit more controversial as I decided what stores should be included or not. Any comments?
