Inspired by IPA’s semi-mythic ocean voyage from Britain to India, The Bitter Bar created Brigantine, a cocktail that tells a seafaring tale by combining rum and a hoppy ale. The bitter hops and rich malt quality of Boulder-based FATE Brewing Company’s India Red Ale complements the strength of Smith & Cross overproof rum.

3 oz FATE Brewing Co. India Red Ale (or another IRA, like Double Mountain IRA or Great Lakes Nosferatu)
1 1/2 oz Smith & Cross Navy Strength (or your choice of overproof rum)
3/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz pomegranate reduction (grenadine)
1/2 oz Pierre Ferrand Dry Orange Curaçao
3 dashes grapefruit bitters
lemon peel and maraschino cherry for garnish

Combine rum, lime, grenadine, Orange Curaçao and grapefruit bitters in a shaker. Fill completely with ice and shake rapidly for 10 – 15 seconds. Strain into a large cocktail glass and top with beer. Garnish with lemon peel and maraschino cherry.
