Picked this up while I was on the road as it looked intriguing and had a nice label (I collect them) to boot. The liquid on the inside was just as lovely. The coffee made this smooth and there was lots of flavor to be had here, which made this just as enjoyable as a cup of morning joe!

Nice, dark pour to this as this poured like the coffee it was full of. A nice, tan head topped it off as the lacing left behind was quite thick and deep. A nice, tan head topped this off as it offset the liquid. Same could be said for the lacing with much of it being concentrated near the top of my pint glass in the form of a deep ring that bled down a bit. Loads of coffee, deep chocolate, and creamer in the nose as the taste was even better than the aroma led me to believe. Slightly burnt, slick, and thick, there was so much roasted, rich, and sweet notes to be enjoyed here that this took quite a while to savor. This was really wonderful and completely took my by surprise!

That's not to say that this was a substitute for a morning pick-me-up, as there was booze here and the warming I felt from it was on par with everything else that was going on. Hard to taste any oats or oatmeal here but this was just as full as any other English Oatmeal Stout that I've reviewed on here. This was plenty chewy and full of everything else that I love about Stouts and this particular style. Quite a first impression from Mikkeller in San Diego!

Type: 5.19-oz. draft
Glass: Clear 8-oz. tulip
From: Coin Haus in La Mesa, Calif.
Price: $4.14
Purchased: Sept. 28, 2018
Consumed: Sept. 28, 2018
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial Oatmeal Stout
Misc.: N/A

Recently went to Coin Haus to knock out my $25 Group On. Was looking forward to this one ahead of time, which went down as No. 5 for me. Had a taster of this on Aug. 10, which I gave a 4.25 on Untappd and wrote, “So smooth and flavorful. Probably in the 4.35 range. Excellent. Was labeled online as “Detention on a Saturday has never been so good. Opaque through the glass, this beer has a full tan head on top. The Burundi coffee beans roasted by Mostra Coffee are front and center. They give off a pleasant roastinees with slight berry attribute on the nose, with the creaminess of the lactose also present. Combined the aroma is reminiscent of a morning flat white. The coffee beans come straight through on the mouth followed a bold creaminess that is balanced by roasted malts on the back of the palate. This 8% oatmeal stout is all about the coffee."

Poured a pitch black color with 3-to-4 fingers of khaki tan rocky head. No noticeable bubbles. Excellent layered lacing. World-class retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled black coffee, vanilla, espresso, chocolate milkshake, lactose, chewy caramel, toffee, dark berries and dark chocolate. (Smell - 4.25)

Wow. Even tasted better than I remembered. Espresso, vanilla, chewy caramel, toffee, chocolate milkshake, lactose, dark berries, bitter dark chocolate and roasty malts. (Taste - 4.50)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 4.50)

Just awesome for the style. Lovely. (Overall - 4.50)

Tall can purchased at the Citi Field location in Queens, NY

Pour very dark brown, with light penetration on the edges, minor dark mocha cap, and some low sheeting left behind.

Dark and dense coffee notes upon the sniff.

Super smooth and easy flowing across the palate.

Dark, brooding, complex, big, bold and quite delicious.....dark chocolate, dark coffee, ooey gooey molten chocolate and fudgy yumminess....also hints of vanilla and some lactic milk sweetness picked up. Great stuff..stout lover run and get some of this nectar.

16 ounce can poured into a Moonlight Brewing pint glass.

Beer is good. Beer is real good. Sweet like you wish your girl was, yet not over the top like your girl is. Add a bit of coffee and some lactose to help your aching bones, and we have a winner.

Presentation: 16 oz. can with the canning date printed on the bottom. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance: It develops a thick, creamy, one finger head that sticks around for a while and dissolves into a thin ring. It leaves some great lacing that covers the entire glass.

Smell: It's a very roasted aroma with mainly fresh ground coffee beans and roasted malts with a hint of oats.

Taste: The bitter, black coffee taste comes in right up front and is kept in check by some sweeter chocolate, brown sugar and roasted malt notes in the background but just barely. This is definitely a "coffee beer" through and through.

Mouthfeel: Rich, full bodied and creamy with medium-low carbonation. It's quite cloying.

Overall: The coffee is bold and flavorful in this beer but can be overwhelming to some. Despite the bitterness and just a touch of sweetness, it's quite cloying which feels different, but not in a bad way. This would probably age really well and would get better with time as the coffee presence slowly gets toned down to more manageable levels. That said, it could very well develop an undesired soy sauce/syrup taste which would ruin the beer. Cellar at your own risk.

Received from @Bum4ever in NBS BIF #8. Reviewed 10/12/18. Thanks Josh!
Undated can. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.25.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, the only penetration occurs at the base of the ring.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.5 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, high density, good retention, diminishing to a seven to thirteen mm ring and a complete, rocky layer.
Lacing – Fair. A single fragment of a wide ring of tiny to small bubbles appears.
First pour – Dark brown, clear.
Aroma – 4 – Coffee! Then some roasted malt.
Flavor – 4.25 – The flavor begins with a COFFEE/chocolate/almond, slightly sweet, taste. The chocolate fades but the almond remains, as does the weakening coffee. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.25 - An interesting combination of flavors, worth trying a second time.

16oz can poured into a pint glass

=====

Look
Poured a black, black-brown color with a 1/2 finger mocha head of tight bubbles, dissipated fairly quick; non-stick lacing reduced to a glassy surface

Smell
Roasty, coffee bean, espresso, vanilla, nutty

Taste
Sweet coffee, dark malt, brown sugar; nutty; slight bitterness and alcohol

Mouthfeel
Velvety, oily, viscous… dare I say “syrupy”; flat

=====

Overall
This was a great tasting beer. It is very drinkable for the style, but I would NOT get it again. I have slight lactose-intolerance and the extra dose in it hit me a short time after drinking it. Purchased single can for $4.99 in Southern California.

Typically dark with a small head that lasted. Not much to the nose. Very solid feel. The taste is concentrated (i.e., you can drink it in very small sips and still get the full affect) and it is clearly an oatmeal stout. The coffee is not over-powering, but clearly present. For me, it was better at the cold end of the range . . . which is unusual for me and imperial stouts . . . but it does fill a niche. All in all, if you like Founder's Breakfast Stout you will probably like, and possibly love, this.

Canned on July 17th, consumed on August 25th - poured from a tall-boy into my Bruery tulip.

Drab dark brown liquid beneath a tan collar and lasting surface slick; faint lacing, fast-running, thin legs.

Sweet, dark aromatics with vanilla, turbinado, and faint berry-laden coffee in the nose.

Rich intensely malty backbone with layers of roast coffee and roast barley alternating. Cocoa nibs, raspberries, oats, and potent yet delicate coffee notes (grapefruit, bourbon, toffee, etc.). Smooth, clean, and faintly syrupy. Mild bitterness throughout. Medium-sweet, slightly earthy finish.

Rich, warming, vaguely chalky mouth-feel. With the oats present, I'm unsure the lactose was necessary, but perhaps it is adding some flavor elements that I would otherwise miss?

Well balanced breakfast stout, simple yet sophisticated with perfectly integrated coffee.
