On tap at the new tasting room.
A: Pours dark reddish brown with a thin tan head leaving trace lace.
N: Fruit, oak barrel, vinegar, slight funk.
T: Dried cranberries, vinous, sour cherry, tannic, astringent vinegar.
M: Semi-medium body and moderate carbonation. A little thin on the finish.
O: Good aromas and the cranberry works with the base sour brown. Near the top of the variants.

On tap at The Bruery in Placentia, CA.
Pours a clear super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some red wine vinegar and slight cranberry aromas. Taste is much the same with only a slight cranberry flavor. There is an acidic quality on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer and definitely one of the better Carmen variants in my opinion.
Jul 08, 2012Pours a clear super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some red wine vinegar and slight cranberry aromas. Taste is much the same with only a slight cranberry flavor. There is an acidic quality on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer and definitely one of the better Carmen variants in my opinion.

Served on-draught into a snifter at The Bruery's tasting room in Placentia. Reviewed from notes.
A: Pours a half finger head, very thin, without any cream, and of awful retention. Colour is a solid black.
Sm: Wonderful bretts and sourness. Wild yeast. A moderate strength aroma.
T: Lovely sourness and bretts are straightforward and too in-your-face. No subtlety at all. The finish is too yeasty (I never thought I'd see the day I said that). A bit watery and bland/empty up front. Poorly balanced both in terms of structure and flavour dominance. A disappointment.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Too smooth. Also too thick, especially considering the absence of flavour.
Dr: Drinkable, but ruined by its poor finish and imbalance. I wouldn't have it again. I expect more given the style. The least subtle sour/wild beer I've ever had. They blew an opportunity here.

@The Bruery for Sunday Sour day
App- A wee bit darker than the raisin version was and had a little bit more bubble activity but still no head or cling to it.
Smell- Much darker and a denser smell to the cranberry version. A tad bit more funk to it with a balanced out tart note. A bit whispy booze but not to much going on here.
Taste- Again this was pretty average for a Bruery sour. This was slightly more dense in taste with a dominant riper red fruit note from the berries and a tad more sour. A little above what the raisin was but not a amazing sour.
Mouth- This was a medium bodied beer with a medium carbonation level. A little bit more tart than the raisin but that could just be from the use of a different fruit.
Drink- I liked this version much better. It still didn’t blow me away but more sweeter and more tart than the raisin version. It was a nice sipper to relax with.

A: Murky dark brown with a fleeting bubbly head.
S: Pronounced cranberry with vinegar and a little cherry. Acetone comes out as the beer warms, but it's not nearly as harsh as the version with raisins.
T: A burst of cranberry right away with a little chocolate and a strong acetic acidity. Lightly tart with a little acetone. The beer finishes with cranberry, acetone, and a strong acetic note.
M: Medium in body with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Better than the raisin version but still rough around the edges and not very enjoyable.

S: Cranberries for sure, woodsy with some malt character.
T: Cranberries and malt vinegar. Strong acetic flavour with some oak and a note of tannin.
M: Strong acidity, it was rough at times even for me. Medium-bodied overall, cleaner for sure than the Carmen with Raisins.
O: Tough drinking this in the heat, but this is a solid effort. Liked it a little more than the Raisins beer.
