473 mL can from the LCBO; one of two new mystery beers included in Lake of Bays' Toasty Toes mixed six. Looks like some sort of fruit beer / herbal tea hybrid based on the info they divulge on the back label. Dated Oct 1 2020 and served barely chilled.
Pours a slightly hazy golden-yellow hue, its body loaded with tiny specks of sediment. Situated atop is nearly an inch of creamy, foamy white head that dissipates over the next several minutes; a lovely curtain of even lacing is draped upon the glass, with a wide collar and thin cap also sticking around. Looks great, but the aroma is kinda dull considering the laundry list of ingredients that went into this one. It's got some pineapple juice sweetness, which is by far the most noticeable element on the nose, as well as hints of green tea, wheaty malts, berries and flowers.
A pleasantly light fruit beer. The passion fruit and green tea come through initially, joined at first by wheaty, bready pale malts, then by hints of black currant and pineapple. The sip concludes on a floral note, with berry and tropical fruit carrying on through the finish and briefly into a hibiscus-like aftertaste before trending off-dry. Light in body, with zippy, assertive carbonation that tickles the palate continuously throughout each sip; feels prickly and crisp at the front end, and smooth / satisfying with each gulp.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. Mystery Beer One is pretty solid for a fruit beer, and I did enjoy my glass, but I think Mystery Beer #2 is probably going to get my vote. This one has an interesting range of fruity & herbal flavours that work with each other alright, but if I take a step back and look at this beer, it mostly comes off as a bunch of extra ingredients piled on top of a fairly non-descript, basic pale lager. If you're at all curious, pick up this mixed pack and decide for yourself - and don't forget to vote! Seriously though, an election in Iowa was recently decided by a difference of six votes.
