A tribute to the historic Flanders Red Ales of West Belgium (and a reference to the vibrant NW Flanders Street in downtown Portland), Northwest Flanders is our interpretation of the classic sour beer style that has inspired so many brewers around the world. A blend of sour red ales aged for over two years in oak barrels and foudres, Northwest Flanders captures notes of plum, currant, raisin, fig and spice with hints of oak and roasted malt.

Pours rusty brown from the can, brief 1" foamy tan head that quickly recedes to a thin ring. Very little lacing. Nose is dark cherry right off the bat, followed by more medicinal roasted dark fruit. Light oak and acetic notes, but very little hint of sourness on the nose. Taste is only moderately sour, though it does linger through a long finish. Sour cherries and currants the main fruit element. Lacks the more funky and...bilic flavors that can happen here, so I'd call this a pretty approachable Flanders. As it warms, some cocoa powder and chocolate-covered cherry comes forward. Feel is very crisp and clean with light and brief carbonation. Overall, this was really pleasant and could see it pairing nicely with a rich lamb stew.

Brown/garnet in the glass with a moderate head that quickly vanished. Red wine vinegar on the nose. First sip is bracingly sour. As the palette adjusts, I get cherry, oak, currant with a hard sour bite at the finish. This is a unique tribute to the classics of the style. Intense but worthy.

A: The beer is very dark brownish red in color. It poured with a short off white head that left a thin collar around the edge and a small patch of bubbles on the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of figs are present in the nose along with notes of plum and hints of oak.
T: The taste follows the smell but is sour with additional hints of vinegar-like flavors.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found the aromas and flavors of figs to be interesting and unique.

250ml can served in a little Cantillon stemmed glass. Canned on 05/05/21.

Pours a dark reddish brown with a small head. Smell is oaky, cherry, tart.

Taste is cherry and tart, definitely some oak astringence, and a fruit skin bitterness that isn't terrible but isn't exactly adding to the flavor.

Mouthfeel is fairly light, very dry. Overall, it's pretty good, but probably not worth the money for the tiny can.

OK, I admit to a bias here. I love Flanders Reds. And Cascade's Northwest Flanders (clever name, BTW) is one of the better examples of the style. The beer is a mahogany red, clear with a few bubbles, and no head to speak of. The smell is powerful, oak and sour dark fruits. The taste is similar. Lots of oak, which is great. It's mildly sour, not mouth puckering. The fruit is great. The balance of fruit, oak and tartness is just right. Well done, Cascade.

250ml can. Can bottom is stamped 'CANNED ON 05/05/21'.
Ruby brown colored body. Brief pale rose colored head. No lacing.
Aroma is big on fig and raisin and sour plum. Also oak barrel.
Taste is sour and tart. Brings the fig, raisin and plum from the nose into the flavor. Oak and roasted malt that comes close to cocoa. Brief spicy fruit flavor in the aftertaste.
Super dry mouthfeel. Okay carbonation.
Sipper sour with dried fruits and oak as the main flavors. Good pairing with dried fruit and Gruyere.
