Gladiator is a German-style dark, robust lager, reminiscent of the beer brewed by German monks to sustain them during their Lenten fasts. This malt-forward lager is a delectable fusion of molasses, dark stone fruit, and toasted pecan flavors, with a subtle touch of residual sweetness.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a nice semi-transparent dark brown. Light tan head. The nose is bursting with toffee, bready malts, a bit of licorice, some chocolate, and a touch of coffee and tobacco. The taste is really good. A mix of sweet and bitter. Toffee, figs, prunes, raisins, slight hops, molasses, bread, and a light layer of nuts. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a light sweetness on the aftertaste. Overall, a great beer.

Bought this bock from Craft Shack. (How else does a Chicagoan get one if he has never stopped in San Fernando Valley?)
Which brings me to my micro-review for Enegren.... I like them in that I now have found a second shop among the 18 million inhabitants of the LA metro that specializes in lagers. Aside from their website declaring their lager speciality, I note that the way BA now designates "actives" indicates lagers are most of Enegren's active beers. And that is a good thing because LA is mostly about sizzle (or tang if you adore hops.) And LA's beer culture, for balance, needs to be more about subtlety... and that comes quicker from brewing lagers. So while Enegren is in the far northwestern corner of North America's most sprawled metropolis, Enegren just might have a positive affect.
At seven years old, Gladiator is unlikely to get lots of big changes. But if I were to make one, I would moderate the carbonation because, I suspect, there is more subtlety in Gladiator's malt/hop interplay... but I can't be sure because the bubbles get in the way. Prost from the San Fernando Valley !

syrup-y and sweet, nose and mouth... kind of 'empty'... and nowhere near a match with the german leaders

Glass: Beer Nerd 12-oz. tulip
Price: $11.99 for a 6-pack
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: April 30, 2020
Consumed: May 1, 2020
Misc.: No canned on date
Grabbed a 6-pack of this with a ton of others on a recent trip to Windmill Farms. I think Enegren is one of the coolest things going, basically brewing what they want to and not worrying about anything else. Meant to review Nighthawk first, but grabbed the wrong can without noticing. Not much online on this one. Was going into it blind.
Poured a brown (slight reddish) color with four fingers of off-white khaki frothy head. Lots of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass at different speeds, kind of resembling a snow globe. Very good spotty lacing. Average retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled brown bread, caramel, toffee, light chocolate, nutty malts and hints of toast. Everything was a little more heightened from the can. (Smell - 4.25)
Wow. Even better on the taste. Got brown bread, nutty malts, toast, caramel, toffee, raisin, light notes of chocolate and cocoa, and red apple. The 8.6 pct. ABV was well hidden too. (Taste - 4.75)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, toasty finish. (Feel - 4.50)
This beer was tremendous. Wow. These guys just kill every beer they brew. World-class. (Overall - 4.50)
