Milk Stout Conditioned on Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee Beans by Rook

Our friends Rook Coffee gave us some green coffee beans that we aged in a freshly emptied Willett bourbon barrel for a couple months. After aging in the barrel, Rook dark roasted the beans, and we conditioned the stout on course ground coffee. The combination of barrel-aging and dark roasting adds a unique flavor to the beer unlike any of our previous coffee beers.

Pours very dark with a fluffy mocha head. Massive coffee aroma. Loads of chocolate and coffee flavor. The barrel aged beans create a very unique flavor - the coffee flavor is very rich and bourbony. Carbonation adds to a very creamy texture. Finish is where I taste the bourbon barrel flavor the most. Very unique and delicious.

Pours jet black with a multi-colored, dark foamy head. The bottom layer of foam is deep creme as if the top portion of a latte has been skimmed off and dropped into the glass. The upper portion of foam is a more beige khaki akin to Jake from State Farm's pants. The colors meld together as the foam settles, which takes a while. Aroma is bourbon from the moment the can is cracked open. Bourbon is complemented by medium-bodied, fleshy coffee, lactose, and roasty, toasty, nutty and caramely malts. It evokes the memory of a heavy handed splash of Buffalo Trace bourbon and light milk into a fresh cup of coffee. Flavor profile is much more grounded and well refined, opening with malty notes of roasty, toasty, caramely and bready. As malts break away, fleshy coffee, lactose, bourbon and oak all swell and crescendo. Dynamics are lovely, with the bourbon apparent, but never boozy in any way. Mouth feel is creamy, velvety with a very light silty texture at the back, akin to a mesh filtered pour over coffee. It has a medium thickness. Overall, superbly crafted, balancing coffee, bourbon and a tasty stout. Balance, no - dynamic - is the word for this beer.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegalau tulip from a 16oz can.

Sample at Kane.

Look : dark black, small head.
AROMA: smoke, coffee, hint of bourbon.

TASTE: peat, coffee, brown sugar, honey. Smaller notes of wood, bourbon, cocoa. A little on the sweet side.

FEEL: thin for a Kane stout, but creamy and smooth.

Good brew.

Kane is so damn persistent at making all their dark beers at various styles and ABV have that classic viscous black body and tall, dense, uniformly level mocha foam head leaving stained glass lacing.

A roasty, damn near crispy cacao earthiness has an almost woody quality to it that the barrel seems to be contributing. That bit of char has a crackly, nutty crunch sensation hidden in the flavor, with a light, sweet creamy milky whip background and some tangy vanilla. As it warms, it almost becomes Mexican-ized, developing notes of caramelized brown sugar.

The thick creamy body has a tingly semi-dry finish bringing out some dustier, grounds-like coffee.

Bourbon is more present here than any other barrel aged coffee bean I have experienced, imparting a slight peppery sting with some herbal, almost cedary sassafras accents. It's really scrumptious and unique.
