With a dessert mindset at hand, Kane Brewing turns to generous additions of chocolate and vanilla for an imperial stout of soft serve proportions. In the end, it looks like you can have your stout and drink it too.
With a pitch black pour, the visually dense Boardwalk Twist pours a rather well blended onyx shade with a light mocha swirl sitting on top. With the strong suggestion of chocolate and vanilla flooding the nose, a background of roast, coffee, cream and fruity alcohol spice brighten up the session. A full and creamy first sip reveals a heavy dosing of chocolate, vanilla, condensed milk, caramel and honey in a most decadent early impression.
As the ice cream accented stout stretches across the middle palate, the tastebuds are quickly awash with nougat-like malt sweetness. Laced with the obvious fudgy chocolate overtones and a stern support of vanilla cream, that soft-serve character sells itself well. With the roastier edges of the stout being smoothened by the sweetness and cream, a softer roast transitions to chocolate very well. A spicy and bitter taste is barely enough to balance a small portion of the sweetness, they do provide a slight fruitiness that seems strawberry-like.
Full from the onset, Boardwalk Twist is pleasantly cloying, chewy and cake-like from front to back. An simmering alcohol warmth allows the ale to seem like a melted Neapolitan ice cream with a kahlua kick. It's the perfect beer to replace dessert as it finishes malty-sweet and with a long and sugary linger.

A: Melted dark choco pour and a dark caramel head.
S: Chocolate-vanilla wafer cookies.
M: Full bodied with a well-carbonated airiness.
T: Almond joy nougat, milk chocolate flavor without ever being too sweet. Light, flaky cake cone. It ends up tasting like a Frosty cone from Wendy's. Good chocolate flavor...simple...well done. It's something I feel like I'd drink everyday.

Pours clear and fairly dark, aggressive pour creates a nice mocha head that lingers. Big chocolate and vanilla aroma. Huge chocolate flavor with a nice dose of vanilla. ABV is well hidden. Ready texture. Overall a fantastic pastry stout, hope to see it again.
