Hollow Sea, our take on this classic Czech-style dark lager, is brewed with floor-malted Bohemian Pilsner and Bohemian dark Munich and with a blend of German crystal and dark malts. It is hopped exclusively with Czech Saaz and fermented with our house lager strain before lagering for six weeks in stainless. Hollow Sea is a rich, malty, dark lager with a subtle roast character and a crisp finish.

Dark Munich malts give this lager a dark brown look with a tan head. The nose is roasty with a touch of smoke. The flavor is robust--deep roast, a bit smoky, and pumpernickel. A bit of tannic bitterness balances the lager's sweeter tendencies. The finish is long and deeply satisfying, staying with you for several moments after the sip goes down. Nice top-shelf American riff on a classic style.

Big fluffy head, settles down around a finger of deep tan froth, extended streak when the glass tilted. Clear and clean brown liquid with an orange cast. Strong mocha element to the nose, sort of takes the edge off of the smokiness, nice graininess, touch of mandarin orange along with grape to cherry fruit, vanilla bean, pleasant enough as it goes but to this nose could just as easily be a porter as a schwarzbier. Light to medium-bodied, eminently crisp, dry enough to stay clean yet stays nicely fluid. Cocoa, creamed coffee, cola and biscuit. Smokiest at the end and retronasally. Carbonation on the weak side. Cherry, maybe apricot fruit, hard to pin down. Again, as in the nose lacks a biting quality. No problem with it per se and with the right food could have at least two cans, well balanced. Just can’t see myself seeking it out. [Canned 10/22/20)

A: A coffee-ish pour has a two finger, light tan head, bubbly and spongey texture, and was solid in its resistance. A quick rush of micro-bubbles within, deep merlot highlights occur around the glass edges from lighting, and an overall silty black appearance gives this a dark and calming appeal. Thick spongey band continues around the inner walls.
S: Creamer coffee, sweet light roast is fresh upon the open. Smooth wet charred wood, vanilla, and whipped cream hints. A fresh bit of caramel malts, Munich, creamer, and a faint smokiness concludes. A good transition of aroma, smooth throughout, even toned and pleasant.
T: The flavor was rich coffee roast, silty wet and oily fresh. Highlights of vanilla, wet charred wood with some smoky highlights. Dried plum skins, roasty bitterness of coffee grounds along with dark cherry fruitiness.
M: Silty roast after feel. Smooth creamy light to medium body has an soft and silty feel on the tongue as well warmth.
O: Overall a style that is usually forgotten or underproduced due to its bigger stronger relatives the porter, stout and BA variants. Smooth swarzbier beer like character, creamy smooth malt base with the Czech hopping creates a strong drinkability, well balanced and favorable example. Nice to expand your horizon and give praise to the lesser known styles (in this case a Tmave Pivo) that is ever bit as enjoyable with every sip.

Dark brown big bubble head quick to dissipate with no lacing.
Mostly roasty aromas, also smells dark soda, coke or root beer maybe, burnt wheat bread.
Taste is chocolatey, light but burnt coffee and molasses or licorice...something like that. It also has a decent amount of sweetness.
Medium body and this one leaves a lingering sweet sensation long after the sip is gone. The carb is a little biting, otherwise a smooth drinker.

Pours a very dark brown, yet clear, with a big foamy head that lingers. Nice sweet malty aroma; bready with a touch of coffee, a little caramel too. Flavor is dark bready crusts, a little yeasty, light coffee, finish has a slightly bitter, dry finish. Carbonation is good. Overall a fun dark lager.

Can to snifter.
Look: dark brown color, clear, holding up to light reveals a cola color. Creamy beige head with excellent retention.
Aroma: light roasted barley, earth/mineral.
Taste: barley, mineral, brown bread. Oatmeal. Very tasty Schwarzbier.
Feel: medium body, smooth and a little silty.
Mefium carbonation.
Love me a good Schwarzbier. Hard to find a lot in this style. This one reminds me a little of Guinness, but without the feather lightness and a tad less creamy.
