Blend 6 started several years ago with a couple different small batch barleywines that we aged for 17 months in Barton's bourbon barrels that we picked up at the distillery in Kentucky. A handful of those barrels were then blended in stainless and then racked for 15 months into an Oloroso Sherry cask that was previously used to finish Stranahan’s Whiskey. Following a period of cold conditioning in stainless Blend 6 was ready to bottle and release.

Pours a dark brown with minimal head. Really nice sweet barleywine aroma, I get lots of bourbon barrel, light sherry. Flavor is buttery toffee, light bourbon barrel, semi-spicy sherry cask. Interesting…. Very light carbonation, yet it has an oily and slick texture. Long finish (toffee, butter, sherry). Overall a tasty beer.

Drank from a 1 pint .9 fl oz / 500 ml black wax dipped bottle purchased at Kane Brewing Company, Ocean, NJ
Blend 6
Served in a snifter

Deep umber appearance. Medium bodied for the style. The beer was topped by a frothy, finger-tall, khaki colored crown that fell to a thin, resilient collar. There was zero lacing however.

The aroma was impressive. Sweet caramel and toffee notes dominated. Loads of brown sugar as well. Dark fruits also came through strong. Raisins and prunes specifically. Fairly boozy, but the alcohol was sweet and smooth. Moderately okay. Rum barrels came to mind, but I could see how this was aged in Sherry barrels. As the beer warmed, the aroma became sweeter and smoother. The Sherry barrel notes were also more prominent.

The flavor profile was really malty and robust. Caramel malts again came through big time. Moderately sweet. Bit of dark fruit character too. Boozy notes hit hard as the beer moved along the palate. Touch of roasted malts on the back end and the finish. Moderate amount of booze as well. For a 15% ABV beer, however, the alcohol was remarkably well buried.

Medium bodied mouthfeel. A bit syrupy but also somewhat thinner than I anticipated for a beer of this magnitude. The liquid contained a finely beaded, moderate effervescence that fluffed up nicely on the palate.

Kane Brewing’s Stacking Casks #6 is an impressive barrel-aged barleywine with pleasant dark fruit and Sherry notes and an alcohol presence that was far more subdued than I anticipated. This was a perfect, slow sipping, New Years Eve treat.

Bottle to snifter. Beer review # 2500.

LOOK: muddy brown, small fading off white head.
AROMA: lots of wood and brandy and barley. hints of raisin, fig, ...touch of rum maybe. very nice.
TASTE: brandy, cedar plank, raw grains, heavy bourbon and oak in finish.
FEEL: a touch hot. low carbonation. smooth.

Good, but a little raw....would benefit from some age....good thing I have another tucked away.

Still a little boozy. Super tasty.

Bourbon, brandy, apple, raisin, fig, leather, wood, tobacco.

Damn this beer was right in my wheelhouse. Decided to drink this one to celebrate my anniversary after returning home from a delicious dinner. Love barleywines and love bourbon barrel aged beers, so put them together and for me it’s a home run. Very thick, chewy feel, to savor each sip. Not sure what I got from the congnac barrel but I definitely got some bourbon, a lot, so it pretty much eclipsed any barleywine sweetness. Wish I had another bottle.
