Why let the French have all the fun, the Danes can make a fine pastry too. Their waffle cone-ish biscuit cookie is fine example of the delicacy and craft of Dutch baking. And that's where Kane Brewing finds inspiration for their next stout series influence.
Jet black and pouring like strong brewed coffee, Stroopwafel Port Omna releases a thick blanket of whipped foam ahead of a sultry and robust scent of fresh coffee dashed with cinnamon, caramel and cocoa and a rather toasted graham cracker medley. As its taste is unleashed upon the palate, the sweetness of caramel, toffee and brown sugar resonate with the tastebuds before the more savory taste of espresso, baker's chocolate and campfire add depth and darkness to the balance. Cinnamon and coffee-like bitterness completes the offset ahead of a long and soothing aftertaste of coffee and cream.
The subtlety of the stroopwafel isn't lost in the stout. The stout being sub-eight percent helps the more finesse pastry make a mark on the palate and to provide a complement to a firm but managable dark ale underneath.
