Style: Rauchbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Smoked malt is one of the more dubious tools in a brewer's bag because thresholds are vastly different. What to one palate is a hint of bacon or a whiff of BBQ to another is ashtray or Band-Aids. How can Carton ignore playing this game? Where can smoldering aromatics go off the beaten craft? In Grape Swisher we have reassembled the deconstructed aspects of a flavored blunt. Rich, dark malts rendered smoky by the addition of oak smoked pale wheat touched with concord grapes and a heavy plug of the hops that smell like their cousins. Drink Grape Swisher and hand me down a 50-pack.

Poured from a growler.

A: Deep Amber/light brown body with a finger and a half of thick off white head
S: Tobacco sweetness
T: Smoke/ash tobacco/canabis with just a hint of sweetness
MF: Smoke flavor lingers. No alcohol burn
O: I don't like rauchbiers but I like this. Just enough smoke to get the swisher sweet across. Leaves my mouth tasting like I just smoked a cigar.
This beer needs to get pretty close to room temp. When I was drinking it cold there was very little going on. As it warmed this beer hit its stride.

From 02/14/16 notes. On tap at Cloverleaf in NJ.

Pours a dark brown; almost black color. Lots of bitter hops, not a lot of grape or smoke. Burnt malts, roasted malts, toasted malts. Medium body and low carbonation.

Overall not one of their better beers IMO; wouldn't seek it out again. Just not much smoke.

I sampled this at a restaurant as part of a flight. The color is a dark mahogany with a creamy, khaki-colored head and extensive lacing. Its smell is fruiter, and less smoky, than I anticipated. The taste is a pleasant blend of grape, chocolate, coffee, oak, and tobacco. The grape gives it a wine-like taste. It has a nice, medium-bodied mouthfeel, is lightly carbonated, and with an ABV of only 6.2% it is very easy to drink. Overall, it is an interesting take on the style. It's not nearly as smoky as other Rauchbiers I've tasted but it has an interesting and pleasing flavor. Carton's offerings are never mundane.

EBF sample pour. Hilarious idea behind this beer. Make it taste and smell like weed, tobacco, smoke and artificial grape. Poured dark brown. The nose and aroma were perfect. A Grape Swisher spliff. Tobacco, smoke, grape soda, some dankness. They hit it right on the chin. Not necessarily a beer I would want much more than a sample of but it was fun in this small dose.
