Carton Brewing Company
New Jersey, United States

Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
he inspiration here is childish adults and mature children becoming wiser through the fundamental genius of a power chord. The motley crew of Carton Brewing, The Happy Hour Guys, the cast of School of Rock, and Sing For Hope all joined together to make a powerful, yet simple hedonistic beer that would resonate with the rock that Dewey loves. Aromas evoke shiny black leather, cheap berry lip gloss, and aerosol hairspray, all laying on the driving rhythm of an American Black Ale’s bass. Proceeds for this beer will support Sing for Hope. Drink School of Hops 'cause rock got no reason, rock got no rhyme.

16 oz can dated 11/16/16 poured into Kane ale glass because why not?

L: Black with 2F tan head with decent retention, leaving some lacing and a bit of a cap and ring.

S: Lots of roasted and burned malts, smokiness and earthiness.

T: Straight-up roasted and charred malts and grains, pineyness and earthiness. Half-smoked porter, half-black ale, all very, very good.

F: Light to medium bodied, light to medium carbonation, good balance, heft, and construction. Good ABV without heat.

O: This is one heck of an amazing black ale. There may not be a better one anywhere. My face is melted!

Canned two days ago. Poured from 16 oz. can into pint glass. It pours almost jet black but with some deep cola hues when held to the light, and a thin, milk-white head and minimal lacing. The smell is rather subdued with roasted malt, char, smoke, hops, and a slight whiff of sweet fruit. The taste opens with strong, roasted malt with a touch of tart berry and toffee. It finishes with a blast of bitter hops. Everything in this ale works. It's fairly light in body with moderate carbonation and its 8% ABV gives it heft. Overall, this is a terrific Black Ale. Typically Carton, it is well-crafted, tasty, and fun to drink. It would pare well with a hearty meal and is great for casual drinking.

Could be Carton's best beer. An every day, or at least every weekend edition of Enigma?

A) Sets the bar high with foam lace that rocks the glass a long time.
S) Leather, smoke, grassy hops, on a molten, charred malt core.
T) More char married to an ascending set of hop chords that light up bright, grassy, herbal, piney, but never fay.
F) Strong weight and verve on the tongue. Feel the vibration.
O) Hard to pin point what adds so much to great Black DIPAs, but this is one of the best. Try 24. (How many I took home!)
