A Biére Sur Lie, or beer aged on wine lees, we made this beer by aging a Saison in oak barrels for a number of months, before returning it to stainless vessels to rest on Sangiovese grape skins, A beer bursting with fruitiness, it is also dry and balanced by grape tannins, and crushably refreshing.

Salmon colored mostly clear pour with a pinkish head. This saison does well to integrate the grape must in a powerful way without getting obnoxious, in fact right in the nose floral and botanical wild tones compliment with oak and wild yeast underneath. Taste has more deep, accessing the grape fruit and skin, touches of oak tannins and hints of vinous notes, vinegar, dry earth, and musty funk that is gentle yet steady. Very elevated feeling, must and playful sourness are well balanced. Perfect for a wet spring day

While probably not an everyday table ale (the money is a bit beyond my comfort zone), Left Hand Path is clearly worth the experience. A well-crafted saison, thoughtfully innovated with fruits of the vine.
More foam would be appreciated here, but at least Left Hand Path took on a pretty rose' from the must. Smells are mostly malt wanting to become one fruit, grapes; but simplicity also appeals to the nose. Tastes are the same, a well-integrated ale that finishes nicely dry. There is sufficient bubbles to cleanse the palate for ratatouille, salad and cheeses, a variety of foods and Left Hand Path passes that key test to be in the saison genus. A complete table ale.
My first from them, I think I might really like these guys if I get to know their beers better. They had complete control over the borderline wild nature of this ale. I like how they at least serve a modest menu; showing they know ale is culinary. And of course, they brew in one of the cooler cities in the U.S.
I got Left Hand Path from Tavour and I hope I get more from Standard.
Here is the release copy from Standard's website:
"Left Hand Path is a Bière Sur Lie, or a beer that is spent time on grape must. After making Right Hand Path, we pushed an oak aged saison onto the remaining Sangiovese skins and let it rest for a few months. The resulting beer is an absolute crusher, and a delicate pink color. It is soft and light, balanced by a subtle wine skin tannin and a touch of acidity. Available in 375 ml and 750 ml format for $11/$18"
