16oz can served in a big snifter. 08/14/23 is on the bottom of the can. @ozzylizard sent it to me in NBS BIF #18.
Pours black with a huge fluffy head that collapses fairly slowly, but doesn't collapse very completely. There's a lot of dark beige head still several minutes after a quite vigorous pour. Smell is first bread yeast and second black licorice. Sweetened roasted coffee is right after that.
Taste veers strongly toward the black licorice, but keeps some sweetness that first made me think of maple syrup and second made me think of molasses. I think the sweetness is a bit more toward the molasses end of that spectrum. Burnt coffee and chocolate bitterness balance that out somewhat -- still generally seems sweet, but not overly so.
Mouthfeel is big and fluffy. Overall, this is very good. Somewhere in between a "modern" stout and a RIS, but definitely RIS recognizable, and very enjoyable.

The Midnight Special (Ghost: Midnight Special) – from Adroit Theory Brewing. Four-pack of 16 oz cans. Acquired 04/10/23 on-line from Adroit Theory, $ 28.87 (Including shipping), $ 0.451/fl oz. Reviewed 21/10/23 (Review 3171). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “DESTROYER NYC 08/14/23”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 47.8 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 53.2 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, red-amber, and translucent.
Head: Average (Maximum 2.4 cm, aggressive center pour), initially fallow but lightens to tan as it oxygenates, high density. Rapidly reduces to a three mm crown and a thin complete cap.
Lacing – A couple of short arches of tiny bubbles and a few small islands remain on the glass. Pretty decent lacing at 12% ABV.
Aroma – 4 – Moderate roasted malt aroma. No hops, no yeast. No ethanol (12. % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with mild roasted chocolate(?) malt. Slightly sweet, with no hops, no yeast. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends with mild gastric heat, slightly bitter.
Palate – 4.25 – Full; approaching creamy; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Typical RIS – roasty and chocolatey, no coffee detected. Good with reasonable price point. Fruit fly approved.
