Our flagship Saison, and one of our long time favourites. We've been brewing it from day one with Alsatian hops and our house Saison yeast. Clove, black pepper, and a touch of iced tea and red berry -- this is a complex yet easy drinking beer made from simple ingredients. Like everything else we make, this beer is naturally carbonated thanks to a secondary fermentation in the can, leading to a pleasantly smooth quality. Not too bitter, not too sweet, it's juuust right.

Poured a 355ml can into a tulip. A one finger fine white head on a very slightly hazy amber lemon. Good head retention. Some patchy lacing.
Spicy fruit in the nose. Earthy. Very mild funk.
Fruity. Earthy. Sweet. Some pepper. A dry finish.
Medium body and carbonation.
An excellent Saison.

355 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jul 23 2021 and served barely chilled.

Pours a relatively clear golden-blonde colour, kicking up more than an inch of fluffy, soapy, foamy white head that falls apart within five minutes or so. By that point, it has been reduced to a generous collar of sudsy froth surrounding a thin cap; plenty of sticky, stringy lace is also flung about in the process - looks great. I'm getting sweetened apple juice on the nose, along with some spicy orange peel and grainy wheat; understated hints of grassy, floral, somewhat earthy hops can also be discerned. Nothing too fancy here, but it all fits the style.

A tasty little saison - graininess, wheat and candi sugar sweetness come through first, with orchard fruitiness and peppery spiciness not far behind. The spiciness carries through the finish, alongside clove, orange peel and some floral, grassy hop bitterness; more yeast spiciness and candi sugar sweetness persisting into the aftertaste - feels like it might start to dry out, but it never quite gets there. Light-medium in body, with aggressive carbonation that froths up in the mouth - kinda overcarbonated, to be honest... but this is a five-month old can-conditioned product that was sitting on a warm shelf when I bought it, so I'll cut it some slack in that department.

Final Grade: 3.82, a B+. I do love trying new saisons, but the last couple years have been a disappointment in that regard (among others) - I've barely been able to find a handful of new ones to review over that time, and few of them have been of notably high quality. Shackland's Saison Davenport is better than many of the Ontario-made alternatives - a more than serviceable saison, but not a top-notch one. I'd most likely buy it again, because this is one of those styles that I really do crave every now and then, and the pickins are always pretty slim.

355 ml can served cold into a chalice. LCBO purchase for around $3 CDN. Brought out of retirement it would seem.

Appearance - Semi-hazy bright golden brew with yellowy hues and capped with two fingers of head. Good head retention and lots of bubbles.

Smell - Candi sugar, some earthiness and light floral and indiscriminate citrus notes.

Taste- lots of candi sugar, some wheat, some grainy and just enough bitter earthiness to keep it balanced, but this leans towards too sweet due to the candi sugar.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, well carbonated and a bit of stickiness initially with a dry finish (although not particularly dry for the style).

Overall - Good, a little above average saison, that borders on being to sweet, but the earthy bitterness keeps things in check to make this an enjoyable sipper.
