it seems like burial is doing a collaboration with everyone these days. this is with birds fly south, who has recently come to my attention and has been impressive in limited exposure to their beers. this is a saison with special red malt, sangiovese grapes, and hibiscus flowers, a unique recipe that is well executed but not quite as wild and interesting from a yeast standpoint as i think i hoped it would be. brick red and pink in the color at the same time, wine looking but somewhat light too, fizzy like a soda. the nose is tart from the grape skins, floral with the light hibiscus, a little bretty funk and tang to it as well, but that seems like less of a factor here than in many of their others. i get some earthy sweetness from the grain when i first taste it, more of a juice than a wine thing from the grapes, and definitely not quite dry. this red malt is interesting here, has some body, but almost has a rye character to it, distinctly earthy more than anything else, which is nice with the uplifting fruit and flowers. some saison type yeast and a little brett, i wanted this to be a bit funkier and drier, but its awfully unique as it is. this grape is so distinct to me, obviously sangiovese, and it tastes great with everything else going on in the beer. great carbonation, a really fizzy lively feel, some drying tartness as it fades one, not overdone on the hibiscus, summery and interesting. it seems like every beer burial makes is both interesting and awesome, and this is yet another one...
