750 mL bottle from the LCBO; produced on May 29 2020 and served at cellar temperature. I figured there'd be sunflower seeds in this, but it turns out they've included the petals, too (not to mention rye and lemongrass).
Pours a clear, effervescent golden-amber colour, with more than three fingers of foamy, soapy, billowing white head erupting from the surface; it rises higher still for a few minutes before gradually settling off, caking the glass with gobs of sticky lace as it recedes. Even at the ten minute mark there's still a thick, lumpy, meringue-like cap in place - looks fantastic to me. It smells of grainy pale malts, lemon peel, rye bread and lemongrass spiciness, with hints of apple, white grape as well as a grassy, floral note.
This is a passable stab at the style - its flavour profile features a lot of grainy, bready pale malts and candi sugar sweetness at the forefront, with notes of rye and apple, as well as a faint touch of banana. The sunflower seeds impart a slightly nutty flavour, but it's subtle and most noticeable towards the tail end; finishes with hints of lemongrass, citrus peel and grassy, floral hops. Grainy-sweet aftertaste with hints of flowers and peppery yeast spiciness; the alcohol presence is minor, but easy enough to notice if you're looking for it. Medium in body - the back label calls this a "highly carbonated" beer - and it does start off that way, but it's so fierce that it had nearly exhausted itself before I was even halfway through the glass. A top off helped a little bit, rejuvenating the 'spritz' of the mouthfeel, but only temporarily.
Final Grade: 3.80, a B+. I enjoyed my bottle of Lickinghole's Sunflower Saison, though it's honestly a fairly forgettable saison overall. The seeds do add a nice nuttiness to the profile, and the lemongrass also helps to counteract the sweet lean of this saison, but not enough to balance the scales. This one just didn't scratch my farmhouse ale itch the way I'd hoped it would - its a little lacking in terms of complexity and balance - nice to try, but I doubt I'd pay $12 (CAD) for another bottle.

750 ml bottle served cold into a goblet. LCBO purchase for $11.95 CDN.
Appearance - Mostly clear dark and rich golden brew. Small half finger of head that fizzles out right away.
Smell - candi sugar, yeast, slight nuttiness and hints of melon. Lemon mixed in as well.
Taste - Clean, fairly sweet with candi sugar and subtle nuttiness. Just enough bitterness to stay balanced. Fairly heavy on the malt.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and a bit more sticky but not cloying than most in the style. Carbonation is quite lively
Overall - Enjoyable enough tipple, a slightly different take on this classic Belgian style that is certainly worth a try.

L: Poured from a bottle to a snifter glass. Had a golden brown color and a cloudy consistency. There was an inch and a half of foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Above average lacing.
S: A good, but not great, aroma of citrus fruit, funky Belgian yeast, a floral quality, an earthiness, and malt.
T: Tasted of a mild amount of the floral quality (the advertised sunflowers), a good shot of Belgian-style yeast (present throughout), some of the earthy quality, a lot of malt (more than expected), and a bit of citrus fruit (lemon). An uneven flavor. The more interesting elements (the citrus and sunflower) are muted, leaving it with an overly malty character.
F: A well-carbonated beer with a sharp finish. Medium-bodied.
O: A very uneven beer with some good qualities. So-so.
