Brewed with a myriad of local malt courtesy of Riverbend Malt House and fermented with our mixed house cultures. Fermented and aged in oak barrels. Once removed from the barrels, Freaks refermented on SC grapefruit and SC ginger. Blended with local sea salt courtesy of Outer Banks SeaSalt and smoked paprika. Conditioned naturally inside the bottle.

Orange beer. Smells funky with some grapefruit, a lot of ginger and a very faint smokiness. Tastes funky and tart. Good grapefruit and ginger flavor with just a hint of paprika. Lightly sweet and finishes clean. Great beer.

750ml bottle, bottled in July 2017, poured into a 14oz snifter glass.
The beer pours a bright golden color, light orange hues that is fairly hazy and cloudy with a fizzy white head that has no retention and yields no lace. The aroma is interesting, strong funk and house cultures, pale grain, light oak with ample ginger, a bit of grapefruit peel and the paprika really comes to life as it warms. The flavors are curious, salty at first, buggy from the cultures, a bit tart and tangy with an nice combination of grapefruit and ginger, pale grain, a bit of the oak barrel while the paprika starts strong when at cellar temperature but is tamer as it warms up but still adds a really strong smokiness to the beer that clashes with the brighter flavors. The mouthfeel is good, lighter medium body, coating but lively and vibrant with plenty of carbonation and a tart and dry finish.
Verdict: An interesting beer from Fonta Flora. The adjuncts nearly work together in harmony but I can't get over the smoke flavor that the paprika imparts. As it warms the beer becomes more cohesive, but when one element is so jarring, it takes away of the balance and it's hard to get past more than about 5-6 ounces of this beer. A nice experiment, hard to call this a complete success, but still a lot to like about this beer.
