Apellonious from North Carolina
4.04/5 rDev -0.5%
look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4
16 oz can 5/3/18 poured into a pint glass. A clear copper orange with a finger of head that dissipates within a few minutes. Smells of bread/grains, caramel malt, light florality. The taste is right in line, almost octoberfestpesque with the balance. Carbonation levels come in about medium, the feel is medium light. A solid maibock on the maliter side.

Pours in a half liter stein a rich full golden with a fluffy quick to fade white head atop.Big caramel and sweet dough in the nose, not overly sweet but more like a sweeter challah note, not much hop presence to be found, there is a bit of crispness in the back end.Grainy with a light to medium feel in the mouth.Starts out with a buttery caramel note up front on the palate followed by a drying breadiness and a slash of spicy hops that keeps it from getting overly sweet. Not a bad rendition of the style.

A: Pours a clear medium golden copper in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate medium golden yellow + burnt orange colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense sudsy foamy (almost pillowy) light beige head that slowly reduces to a large patch of slightly mottled thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of cereal grain + toasted malts with a moderate amount of grainy sweetness and light to moderate aromas of light fruit (apple + pear + white grape) yeast and spicy + earthy hops.
T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of cereal grain + toasted malts with a moderate amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of light fruit (apple + pear + white grape) yeast. Finally there is a light flavor of spicy + earthy hops which contribute a light amount of bitterness which fades quickly leaving a relatively clean finish.
M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with a light amount of dryness and a hint of alcohol warming in the finish.
O: A solid example of the style from an NC brewery with nice malts flavors, fruity yeast, and light hoppiness. Enjoyable and relatively easy to drink.
