Can into Nucleated Tulip
Look: hazy orange pouring a 2 finger off white head
Smell: lots of grassy/herbal hops. Some orange
Taste: strong herbal hops, little bitterness. Some orange and light sweetness
Feel: light medium body, moderate carbonation, crisp
Overall: not the best sour ipa I’ve had

Pours looking like orange juice, opaque orange maybe slightly carrot-like color. Generous white foamy head that falls to an island and ring. So I guess it looks as it should.

The smell...hmmm...killer isn't the exact adjective I would use. It's all there as claimed...pleasantly so...but it isn't in your face. Not like I popped the can and you could smell it across the room.

The taste...some added intensity there. Not the least bit sour, so I don't know where that's coming from. Blood orange and grapefruit and that works as a flavor combo just fine. And the lactose does give it the tropical punch vibe overall. Not super sweet but you can tell it is there. Definite earthy counterbalance, only mildly bitter and very briefly.

Feel is creamy, a bit sticky on the lips. I don't know if it's me or what, but my impression changes after the fact. It feels luxuriant with the smooth, creamy feel. But after it strikes me as watery. I've noticed this with similarly made beers.

Overall...well, it's OK. Seems like it is an in between beer, but it hits the brewer's intent...or maybe the intent was retrofitted to the beer? Whatever, it seems more true to what they wanted to make than it does style. Good enough, not something to rush out and find.

On-tap 11/13/2021 at the brewery’s taproom in Warwick, RI, served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a light cloudy orange/gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains juicy fruity citrus, floral and dank hops and light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of juicy citrus fruits and some caramel that are quickly followed by a strong but not over-powering floral and dank hops bitterness. The lactose is mild but seems to temper the stronger flavors. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and brings a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty and complex, goes down very easily, not too filling, decent kick, good variation of style. This is a very solid beer to drink for a while.

This is a milkshake IPA. Sweet, but not overly so. Creamy and just a tiny bit of sour on the end. Amazing.

Review from notes, 10/31/18

A: Medium orange with some deep orange tones and some gold, almost a pumpkin soup-like color - beyond hazy, turbid - pours with a small white head, fades to a few wisps, leaves some nice lacing

S: Big, juicy, sharp citrus - tangerine, orange, and grapefruit juice and flesh - blood oranges, with citrus juice, rind, and zest, and just a hint of raspberry - layers of green, herbal hops underneath the citrus - slight hint of spice - some tropical notes as well, mostly mango and some pineapple - hints of underripe peach - some lactose aromas with some light hints of yogurt - some light sweetness and pale malts at the base

T: Could probably pass for a fruit smoothie - big citrus, as the smell suggests - some citrusy flavors from the hops, notably tangerine, orange, and grapefruit juice and zest - the blood orange adds a distinctly "real" citrus edge, with some juice, rind, and some oil that sticks to the back of my mouth and slightly burns my throat (in a good way) - herbal and green hops, hop pellets, some spicy hops - slightly woodsy - some notes of pine - some tropical notes with some sharp pineapple - some sharp, underripe peach as well, and maybe some apricot - some sweetness at the base, both from residual lactose and from the fairly neutral pale malt base - malts are pretty nonexistent though, as seems intended

M: On the heavy side of medium, with some chewy malts and some lactose, a bit sharp and acidic to some extent, low carbonation

O: I keep looking into my glass to see if I can see any pulp

I suppose I'm still attempting to make sense of milkshake IPAs in general, but this almost makes sense. The use of blood orange is great; it flirts with being overly aggressive but never really crosses the line. It is supposed to taste like blood orange, after all. The base beer is nice, and I would happily try other variants.

No canning date (presumed to be late 10/18)

Pours a murky, totally translucent golden orange with over two fingers of frothy white foam; good head retention and plenty of soapy lacing hangs around for the long haul.

Aromas of blood orange, grapefruit pith, light pine, and mild lactic and herbal hops undertones; a smooth lead-in to things to come.

Taste shows an excellent balance of juicy blood orange and light lactic influence coursing through the profile; bits of grapefruit juice and spicy, herbal hops on the finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth, consistent, and slightly creamy but held in check nicely; great medium body and balanced carbonation; mild citric acidity comes in toward the otherwise bright finish, but ultimately contributes more to a feeling more juicy than tart.

Very well-done take on a New England IPA, and pleasantly sessionable for one that verges toward the milkshake style. Good presentation of flavor, consistent, and easy going down; all elements you’d ask for from the style.
