Crop Year 2017; the name of a new series of beers designed to catalog our impression of this year's hop varieties. In this batch, we explore 2017's Simcoe & Amarillo crop. Base beer is a squeaky clean & crisp strong American pale lager. Burp HOPS!

So lemme tell you, I picked this beer up in Feb 2017 at Berkeley Bowl, didn't drink it until April 2017, and holy moly was it damn good.

Pours yellow, looks professional as can be, high grade clarity to this, virgin white head, 1/2". Lagers lookin' clean up in here. The aroma, Amarillo just doing Amarillo things paired wonderfully with an expressive lager yeast. Bright orange, hay, grass and crisp morning sulphur from the yeast. Impressive.

Taste damn that Simcoe gives such a nice, dry bitterness, which is further paired with the levity of the pilsner (I presume) malt here. Still hitting the flavor of Amarillo by morning, good dry but expressive yeast, this beer is so much more than the sum of its parts. Easy to drink, but pungent yeast and hops that work great together, crisp body, crisp carbonation. Whatever IPL you hear people brag on, this is just as good if not better in all likelihood.

Its sick to think how good some of the IPL like beers from Northern California are that get almost no mention (Fieldwork, Alvarado, Moonraker, Cellarmaker come to mind).

Look: Pours crystal clear, bright yellow. Very low head formation on a medium aggressive pour. The head itself is bright white, with large bubble, and dissipates very quickly.
Smell: Being a lager, this is obviously not the most pungent beer, though the smell reminds you much more of the lighter WC IPAs than lagers. I've never quite had such a hoppy aroma on any lager.
Taste: Both sweet and bitter. There is your typical corn-like sweetness that is typical to all lagers, but all the hops they got in this guy (bitterness is 50 IBU by the way) definitely mess with your head. There's quite a bit of floral hop character on the front end, then sweetness in the middle, and bitterness again on the back end and the aftertaste. Alcohol is at 6.5%, and not apparent at all.
Feel: Light and easy going. High carbonation, typical of the style.
Overall: I'm not really a fan of lagers, but picked this up on a whim. I guess that's what all of this craft obsession is about though. This beer is clean, smooth, pleasant, and I'm sure most people would love it. Definitely the best lager of any type I have ever had.
