Earthy. Tart. Complex. This unique dark Saison has a pleasant acidity and showcases dark fruit and dark malt flavors (including chocolate rye). After fermentation, Oregon Cranberries are added to provide a hint of tartness, and nice depth. True to the Saison style, this beer finishes refreshingly dry, perfect to pair with holiday dishes

As the first review of Dark Saison, I should say that I like Maplewood's moxie. Lot's of ambition to bring something new to the brewery world (distillers, too) But, let's not push the envelope too far... particularly when it comes to Belgian styles . An area that far more experienced American breweries still have trouble interpreting. (Those Belgians are quirky, uncommon to us.)
As an experiment, Dark Saison should go back to the drawing board. In fact the best thing for Maplewood to do is get lots of feedback on one of their blonde saisons, improve it and then try to invent a dark style... after a couple of years.
I do not like calling this a Saison. And it is not just because of its dark Looks. It also doesn't Smell like something that I'd typically eat with food (my primary test of the 60 Saisons I've Had.) It Tastes and Feels like a dark lager... maybe with more hops than it should.
Overall: there is nothing terribly wrong with this beer. I even enjoyed it more than this review indicates. Its incurable problem is that Dark Saison is trying to be something it is not. Sorry.
I want to like Maplewood. But my advice: find your niche and stick to it.
