473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jan 22 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours bright golden-yellow colour with a crystal clear body that is initially topped with nearly two fingers of puffy, soapy white head. It disintegrates within several minutes or so, with a quarter-inch cap of tight foam remaining in place; minimal lace, but looking at it sure made me thirsty. Nothing unexpected on the nose - grain husks and bready pale malt sweetness, with hints of grassy hops and lemon zest.
Keeps things simple, which is almost never a bad decision for this style. I'm tasting plenty of clean, grainy, bready pale malts, with notes of grassy hay and spicy hops developing nearer the finish, lingering into a finish with some cereal grain sweetness. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that remains crisp and lively well into the glass, resulting in a refreshing, highly poundable craft lager that I have no real problems with.
Final Grade: 3.76, a B+. I actually liked Toboggan's Holy Roller more than I expected to. I mean, there are dozens of locally made craft lagers to pick from at this point, but this stands out as one of the better ones that I've tried in quite some time - it's a quality brew, worthy of its namesake. Try this if you enjoy pale lagers, and to contribute to a worthy cause while you're at it.
