Introducing from the dark depths of the east bay, Destination Unknown Double IPA: A Cadillac-sized hop bomb that cruises the streets of Berkeley leaving notes of grapefruit oil and honeydew melon in its wake. Pouring this beer on Shattuck, its hazy body looks like the fog rolling off of the bay with a head of hop resin that dissipates just as you hit Durant. As you slide past Sproul Plaza and the smell of patchouli wafts by you find refuge by planting your nose in the glass, and inhaling a ridiculous amount of Mosaic hop-induced notes. Fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice, ripe melon, fruit salad, and copious amounts of pot... ...wait, that last one is actually some kids lighting up on Channing. Keep on strolling, taking sips and enjoying the body that is saturated with Mosaic hops and sticking to palate like your feet to the floor of the 79 bus. By the time you hit Ashby you can't help but wonder how on earth you drank a pint glass out of a paper bag, but it doesn't matter, the remnants in the glass still boast huge hop aromas, just put your nose in that bag and inhale over and over. Don't worry, you'll blend right in. Time for another pint, hang a left on Adeline and see where Destination Unknown takes you.

Head down memory lane with Rancid. A band that kids nowadays gleefully put patches on their backpacks in full poser mode. But anyways, here's a bright orange juice looking beer, haze territory, 3/4" white head on top when poured into a 2017 Marquette jersey pint glass. I don't generally like hazy ipa appearances, but I'll make an exception here.

The aroma smells like Mosaic hops. Weed, bright berries, passion fruit. Taste brings a heavy proprietary hop presence with almost nothing else to taste. They're pungent and in large proportions. Lots of Mosaic. The body is pretty smooth and the alcohol is hidden very well, which is something that Fieldwork has always done a really good job with. The carbonation was fine, but it 'feels' low because of the smoothness from the hazy flaked wheat and oat supplements to barley going on.

Overall its an impressive single hop beer that has a bit more variety of flavors than the usual Mosaic hop. Well done.

some stone fruit on the nose, wieghty full body, light cloudy appearance and a ring, but I wonder where the center of definition here lies in taste, it remains unknown to me, this beer's destination on my list.

Deep orange haze. Nose is peach rings and a little scallion. Taste is peach, grapefruit, and a little herby greenness. Thick, slick mouthfeel. Not too much bitterness. Well done.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass

A: Pours hazy golden amber with a frothy cream white head that settles to a firm layer and laces beautifully.

S: Resinous, citrus oils, spicy pine, slight herbal grassy tones, tropical and stone fruit, a touch floral, biscuity slightly bready malt, and caramel sweetness.

T: Quick spicy herbal slightly dank hit before a wall of citrus takes over, tangerine, grapefruit, and lemonade, some resinous pine, underlying tropical and stone fruit, guava, nectarine, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, apricot, and a hint of blueberry, a touch floral, biscuity slightly bready malt, and caramel sweetness.

M: On the fuller end of medium body, moderate carbonation, soft on the palate.

O: Impressive depth of flavor from just a single hop. Fantastic Mosaic DIPA!

This pours a cottony yellow orange. I get some juicy citrus and berries on the nose, surprisingly enough. Lightly bitter for such a big beer with a pleasant mix of piney pineapple and a juicy berry bittering. This was a good one.

Like the Streets Ahead, this was a beer from Fieldwork that I traded for ages ago but took a while to get around to. This one was much better than that as it was so easy to enjoy and went down so smoothly, which was quite surprising for a beer of this style from the left coast. Not overly hazy, this nailed the style well while showing off it's better attributes!

Not a bad pour to this as the liquid was murky, turbid, and off-gold. Not surprising given the style but plenty of head topped this off as the lacing was moderate and scattered above the midpoint of my pint glass - most of it along the back side. Lovely aroma of fruit cocktail on the nose with plenty of pineapple, grape, and melon on the nose with all of those bursting forth in the taste. Incredibly juicy, chocked full of Mosaic, and subtly dank, the taste had me hooked from the first sip as it never let go throughout my time with this. Earthy citrus, pineapple, and a deep, vibrant earthiness kicked in well before I finished this off as this really took off once it warmed up. The carbonation was lively and spot-on as the malt was present but in the background to the wonderful array of flavors in this.

There was enough booze in this but you wouldn't know it unless you looked at the can or this site. Most New England IPA's I've had have been overly juicy, unfiltered, and bright but this one wasn't any of those. Regardless of that, this felt like fruit come to life without any sugar, making feel like I was having Hawaiian Punch again for the first time. Really impressed with this one as it deserves to be ranked much higher in it's category!

On tap at local Fieldwork.
L: hazy orange yellow in appearance. Looks hazy, juicy and inviting. Totally opaque with zero clarify. No head, supple lacing.
S: mango, freshly cut grass, and citrus all on the nose with a slight yeast presence.
T: tons of fruit flavor, with pineapple, orange, mango, apricot and tangerine being the majority. Pink starburst and bubble gum flavor is noticeable as well, which is something that seems to be a regular occurrence with Fieldwork NEIPAs.
F: smooth and creamy with a medium feel and weight. No booze presence, just wish it was more soft and lofty.
O: Got to admit, it’s great and dangerous for the AbV. Very juicy and in Fieldwork Fashion. I am glad to try, and would drink again. Cheers!

Straight pour from a 16oz can to a stemless wine glass (HPB’s Bottle Friends cat glass). This was canned on April 18, 2019 according to a canning date printed in black ink on the underside of the can (“CANNED IN DRUIDIA 04/18/19”), making this can 6 days old at the time of consumption.

Appearance (4.5): This pours out a foggy golden yellow with warmer undertones, looking just about like orange juice. It’s capped by a solid two-finger head that dies down at a leisurely pace, leaving an intricate, dense tapestry of leggy, sudsy lacing all the way around the glass, tied to a rocky cap. This is gorgeous.

Smell (4.5): From a distance, notes of orange pulp and fruity bud come out of the glass, but closer up (as in, nose in the glass) big notes of passionfruit, pineapple Lifesavers, Mai Tai, and a nice understory of resinous ganja come forward. There’s some malt in here, and while it doesn’t jump out at you you can still tell it has some substance: fresh pain de campagne, white sugar cookies, and maybe a bit of sourdough crust. Don’t be mistaken though, the nose is thoroughly dominated by hops, and I love its punchy color.

Taste (4.0): This is surprisingly taut up front, offering some light, bright navel orange pith mixed with Orangina, mixed berries, and a nice, grassy bitterness tying a bow on it. Behind that on the mid-palate, a slightly piney, resinous and dank marijuana character comes through, but it remains balanced, checked by the mixture of sweet and bitter that the hops bring up front. On the back end, the beer leaves notes of limeade, light strawberry, pineapple flesh, and a clean, green, grassy bitterness that lingers just a bit. Malt? Sugar cookies and floury baking soda biscuit crusts just barely show up, underneath it all. Surprisingly, there’s basically no sign of booze.

Mouthfeel (4.0): The first thing that jumps out here is a slight hop burn, showing up with a slightly chewy, mild chalkiness on the palate and flaring out with a moderate burning sensation on the way down. Beyond that, you’ll notice the carbonation feeling surprisingly tingly with a slightly coarse texture, floating a moderately full body with a creamy, slightly chalky feel. It all washes out fairly cleanly between an easy foam up paired with some drying hop oils.

Overall (4.0): To be honest, I was expecting a bit more with this beer, given my past impressions of Fieldwork #hazebois but this is still pretty damn good. It’s got a very interesting and extremely pleasant nose, plus a killer look, but it fails to deliver what the nose promises. Moreover, the feel betrays a hop burn and astringency that suggests the beer maybe needs to sit a week or two before coming into its own. What will be lost in that time, I’m not sure—maybe nothing! But, this beer is six days old and if that’s not the best time to enjoy and evaluate a (D)IPA, then I don’t know what is. This beer is quite tasty and shows a lot of promise, but maybe requires a bit more patience. Recommended, but given Fieldwork’s bonkers record with hazy (D)IPAs, there are better options available from the same brewery.

Canned 2/28/19, consumed 3/2/19

Pours hazy & cloudy Tropicana orange juice look, big thick inch+ head, good retention and amount of thick lacing.

Aroma of grapefruit and melons, dank herbal and some grassy notes - great blend and strength.

Taste is right there with the aroma, dank & resinous herbal/floral/grassy/earthy notes with a big, zesty fruit punch.

Feel is smooth, med/full, lively with solid carbonation and a good amount of balancing bitterness.

Overall, yet another terrific hazy that Fieldwork has been consistently putting out lately. All of their recent re-releases have been seemingly better than before and definitely compares with the best West Coast hazies.
