Eternal Slumber is a special blend of Sleeping Forever Imperial Stout aged in Cognac, BliS Maple Bourbon, Muscatel barrels used to finish rye whiskey, and Laird’s Apple Brandy barrels, all conditioned on hundreds of pounds of coconut. Possibly the most complex, layered stout we’ve ever released. Dense, viscous, dark chocolate cake, frosted cinnamon rolls, Mounds bar, and Samoas.

The blend of the barrels gave a nice depth to this beer, while the adjuncts work in harmony with one another. Wish I got a bit more coconut, but it seems that it had faded by the time I drank this.

26 February 2020 - Beer #37
Price: $22 at Other Half Brewing
Appearance: 4 - motor oil black, no redness whatsoever. The residue on the glass is insane. I have to ding it for the complete lack of head and for the coconut floaties. Eww.
Nose: 5 - not as intense as I expected. I smelled it when I opened it, but it's surprisingly mild in the glass. Lots of barrel with some coconut. More pleasant than intense.
Taste: 4 - this is a crazy stout. The flavor is intense. You get every barrel, like all the barrels. Coconut too. The flavor is immense; it just doesn't taste amazing. Like there's a lot of flavor, but the flavor isn't fantastic.
Mouth: 4 - very strange. It's thick like motor oil, but it thins out on the back end. Very sticky, but a little dead.
Overall: 4 - not incredible like I wanted it to be. What can I say? My standards for barrel aged stouts are high.
Cheers!

Pours impressively thick. Looks like motor oil for sure.
Smells of chocolates and barrel notes.
Flavors include rich chocolate, barrel notes, finishes with a really nice coconut note.
Mouthfeel is very viscous with low levels of carbonation. No booze at all.
This is an outstanding stout!

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a very small head, and no lacing.
This one smells like toasted coconut, coconut cream, vanilla, brandy, maple, spice, molasses, caramelized sugar, and bourbon.
Not at all unsurprisingly, this is incredibly sweet, and pretty syrupy tasting. Despite all of those vagaries, it's still a delicious and absurd pastry stout. There's sweet coconut galore, slightly toasty, but mostly creamy and oily and digestif-AF, with that syrupy after dinner - why am I sweating so much - why am I so full - feeling. There's a lot of barrel character to chew on here. I mostly get brandy and maple, with a touch of sweet fortified wine as well. There's sugary chocolate fudge and vanilla, too, with just a hint of bourbon.
This has that classic Veil stout body, absurdly thicc, almost too big, with the feeling of basically syrup at times. There's no booziness, though, which is a real plus for how many barrels this beer saw.
This is just plainly crazy and absurd, and it tastes super great.

The beer pours a dark brown head. The beer itself is a dark chocolate black with a syrupy texture.
The smell is very good and rich while the coconut comes out the most followed by a sweet red delicious apple note. Some cognac comes out in the finish followed by an alcohol note in the smell. There is a moderate sweet dark chocolate smell at the center of this beer though.
The taste is also fairly sweet with a main note of apple brandy and cognac. The chocolate and coconut come more in the finish with the chocolate as the stronger of the two.
It has a heavy and syrupy finish with a smooth and slightly molasses like feel in the middle.
The beer is nice and indulgent and good but notes seems to be too strong to get along with each and end up as a mess.

Big cousin Viking sent me 4 bottles from the Veil 3rd Anniversary Week. He told me this was one of the best he'd ever tried, and he was SO RIGHT!!!! Easily top 3 beer for me of all time. This is a thick, smooth, balanced, chocolatey, graham crackery masterpiece. The barrel profile is integrated perfectly into this complex beer. No punch from the booze but yet it's still warm and enveloping, not bitter or thin, not cloying, and no weird aftertaste at all (my usual issues). My only tiny complaint is that it may tip a slight bit to the sweet side but everything else is perfect. Also I got basically no coconut in the taste, although I think I could see it.
