Summer by Rondeau Bay means visits to nearby orchards for the best produce in Ontario and our Orchard Cherry Lager is a perfect representation of the season’s sweet and tangy flavors. Originally brewed as a seasonal beer to pay tribute to the local cherry harvest, this beer quickly became a fan favorite, prompting us to offer it year-round. It boasts a perfect balance of sweet and tart, providing a distinct taste of Erieau that you won’t find anywhere else.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from the University St. West LCBO in nearby downtown Windsor. My first beer from the Erieau, Ontario brewery.

Contained within a Pretentious Glass Company Amber Lager pint is a light-amber to old-gold clear beer (SRM 4-6). A two-inch frothy white foam casually drops to a thick blanket. Fingers of sticky lace trace downwards with each sip. Random carbonation forms throughout.
The aroma opens with malt and light soapiness. The cherries are faint and barely noticeable.
This one is more sweet than bitter, with bitterness overcoming after a strong second effort. Toasted malt and faint cherry follow the aroma. The finish has a strong astringency that is unpleasant.
A light to medium body with a sticky texture. The alcohol presence seems higher than the 4.1% suggests. Carbonation is soft, yet ample.
This is a decent Lager, however, the lack of cherry is disappointing. That disappointment is offset as the Chiefs play the Ravens.

Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Feb 13 2019 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear reddish amber colour, with half a finger of loose, frothy white head situated atop. It peters out within two minutes' time, leaving behind a thin collar and an otherwise bare surface. The nose includes some syrupy cherry sweetness, with additional hints of grainy, caramelized malt, cherry pit and red licorice candy. Nothing to write home about so far; this is the part where I brace myself...
Ehh, it's not bad. Some tasty, honest to goodness cherry juice notes do show up - mostly sweet, not tart - and moreso towards the finish. The backbone consists of that doughy, grainy pale malt sweetness that shows up in all of the Bayside products I've sampled to date. The sip concludes with lingering hints of cherry juice and wheaty, doughy malt, with a similar aftertaste that rapidly fades. Light-ish in body, with an odd syrupy quality - the carbonation levels are fine, giving some much-needed crispness to this reasonably drinkable lager. Still, this just feels a little heavier than I'd expect for a 4.1% lager, and while that's not a huge problem, it does make the beer a bit less refreshing than it might be otherwise.
Final Grade: 3.4, a B-. Bayside's Orchard Cherry Lager didn't leave me wanting more, but at least it made for a decent diversion. One thing to its credit is that that they seem to have used real cherries (vs. flavouring), and this is reflected in its authentic, sort of juicy flavour. If you have a fondness for cherry beers then I'd recommend this, and as always, it's a pleasure to see something new on the shelves from one of this province's more obscure brewing operations.
