On tap at Southern Grist Brewing in Nashville, TN.
This one pours a very hazy golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells kind of like a pina colada, with creamy coconut, pineapple, and citrusy hops.
There’s very little bitterness, just coconut melding quite well with the tropical and pineapple-esque hop flavors. Whenever I’ve had an IPA with coconut, I always kind of wish more breweries did that.
This is creamy, and super drinkable, with a nice smooth finish.
This is just a pleasant pour, nothing super complicated, but fun to drink.

Apparently, the flavoring of ales is now extending from stouts into IPAs. Although they're probably less accepting, adding coconut shouldn't go wrong in one. From a pint can it came, then into a clear glass liter mug. There's very little head and the color of the brew is a hazy blond-amber. The smell of coconut actually supercedes the normal IPA aroma. The taste of coconut actually supercedes the normal IPA flavor. Obviously, with this much coconut flavoring involved, this will be subjected to a do you like or dislike coconut opinion. This review will assume that you knew what you were getting when you chose a coconut IPA. There isn't much hoppy bitterness, although some is there to push this toward the dry side. Nor is there a heavy malt presence, although there's some sweetness and the body is sufficient. This isn't exactly a desert beer, nor is a traditional IPA. Sort of unique, so if you like coconut and mild IPAs, probably not a huge population, this is for you.

16 oz can, dated 2/11/21, into Urban South Willie.
Hazy blonde with a tall creamy cap of 2 fingers, receding to 1 leaving looped lacing.
So on this aroma, I was expecting it to be gimmicky, like using actual coconut and messing up the IPA completely. But the coconut and tropical character is absolutely from the expert use of hop combinations and precise timing - it's beautiful. It's tropical in a way only hops could be - dirty, earthy, green...all from those oddball varietals, and the coconut essence hangs around without being sweet or gimmicky. Slight coconut popcorn. I guess I'd say it exceeded my expectations in a big way. Very nice work.
Flavor is pretty good, brings a nice green hop presence, with notes of dried coconut, tiki cocktail, mandarin orange, and orange zest. It's almost Brazilian in flavor. There's less sweetness than the nose puts off, so it's kind of a polarizing experience, but there's nothing off about the flavor.
Feel is crisp and juicy, light to medium bodied, with a good amount of carbonation. Slight resins on the finish.
Overall, this is one I'll probably buy one more single of - simply because there's just too many great SG beers to commit to this one. This would make a fantastic beach beer.
Price paid : $4.29 / can
Would buy again : yep

Released 8/17/19; drank 9/7/19 @ the Yarchives.
Cloudy yellow appearance.
A rough pour yielded a big white head; a thick curtain of lace.
Suntan lotion notes in the nose.
Medium thin mouthfeel.
No joke, this tastes like suntan lotion smells.
Permanent pass.

Foggy burnt gold with a fuzzy white head settling to a firm collar and fluid arms of lace.
A nice smooth coconut flavor comes with the tangy sharp but mild hop tropical character that also features a semi-bitter woodiness.
The soft tingly carbonation comes to a light sting on the finish.

Taking the IPA to tropical levels, the brewers at Southern Grist hark back to their homebrew days and pull out an extra experimental coconut IPA for a beer that drinks slightly more like pina colada.
Pale gold and cast in a matte finish, the turbid beer sits creamily in the glass like extra pulp orange juice. Its frothy, ivory foam precedes an an aromatic display of tropical fruit, citrus and a light herbal character remiss of fruit punch. Sweet and pastry rich, the beer's malty upstart plays host to honey, faint caramel and pie crust to a near cobbler level.
As the cereal, grain and malt flavors subside, the hops pull from the recesses and deliver a wallop of fruit. Pineapple, mango, papaya and passionfruit bring a strong tropical fruit flavor to complement the growing coconut while a zesty citrus taste carries bold notes of orange, pink grapefruit and a pep of lime. Trending herbal, pleasantly grassy and bitter, the greener attributes of green tea, sassafras and a mild suggestion of hemp begin to round out the finish.
Medium bodied but developing a crisp, clean and refreshing tone, the beer's bitterness and dryness lands it smack-dab between classic New England styled IPA and more traditional West Coast varieties. A hint of gin spices up the finish and allows the ale to capture that beach cocktail sensation perfectly.
