Southern Grist Brewing Company
Salt on the Rim
Canned on 5/1 in time for Cinco de Mayo
Look: The beer is hazy and translucent. Golden straw in color with an active bone white that quickly disappears. Constant stream of bubbles rise to the top of the glass. Zero lacing. A nice appearance for the style with inviting, lively carbonation.
Smell: The nose on this beer is huge. A lot of salinity and minerality. Huge lemon and lime citrus and acidity. Lots of green jello. The sweetness that comes along with the zest, and the bright acidity from the juice. Earthy black lime peel. Fresh, bright and earthy all playing nicely together.
Taste: This beer is very tasty. A lot of lemon and lime flavor combined with sweetness and tart acidity, neither dominating. Diluted like juice, lemon/lime sour gummy candy. The acidity is not too high. And the finish nails the dry, crackery wheat finish I love so much in the style.
Feel: Moderate carbonation, soft, with some gritty pithiness, dry and only slightly puckering.
Overall: A refreshing and tasty beer that nicely resembles the cocktail, as much as a beer could, while still drinking like a beer with some level of complexity. These beers can easily go sideways, but this one does not. I’m glad the beer is not overly acidic or enamel stripping.

Poured into a snifter. A slightly hazy pale straw color with a thick white head. Fresh-squeezed lime, faint citrus, and wheat on the nose. Taste is definitely margarita-like with tart lime, some orange and floral notes, and prominent mouth-watering salt. No off flavors. Body is a bit heftier than most Goses. Straightforward and well-made.
