New beer from a great Nashville brewery
Southern Grist Kvass, canned 11.2, opened 11.12, poured into a pint glass
Kvass, Russian for "leaven," is a 16th century beer-like beverage made with grains including wheat, rye, and barley or by using dark rye bread, and often has additions of sugars, birch sap, berries, and fruits fermented with a simple baker's yeast. It's low in alcohol and often flavored with herbs or fruits to knock the bitter edge out. A national drink for Russia, it's also found throughout Eastern Europe.
Brewers notes:
This Kvass Ale had a mash containing both rye malt and dozens of actual fresh loaves of Rye bread baked by our team at Lauter. This rather obscure, but very traditional Eastern European style is brewed to be a session strength beer that is full bodied and flavorful, while remaining a super drinkable beverage that pairs great with food.
New style of beer for me . Hey, I love rye bread , this has to be good, right?
Pours a translucent golden liquid, pencil thick off white foam cap that immediately fades away . No carbonation , it just sits there on its Kvass
Aroma is rye, bread, malty
Taste is rye , bready, vague smokiness, hint of lemon citrus
Mouthfeel is low sudsing, hint of sour
Something new to taste, not an style that I would pursue again , I can tick this style off of my list
Gonna get my Kvass out of here and perhaps try another beer. Dos vadanya comrade
