In Science, the symbol most often used for density is ρ (the lower case Greek letter Rho). We used the Rho grain bill to create a stout with a dense mouthfeel and a dialed back bitterness. To help elevate this into a coffee stout, we worked closely with Mike and the experts at Mostra Coffee. Mostra Coffee is an artisan micro-roasting company that sources, roasts, brews, and serves only high-grade specialty coffee. Mostra was recently named a top three finalist for Roaster of the Year 2019 from Roast Magazine, and won Best Original Cold Brew and Best Signature Cold Brew at the Cold Brew City Competition.
Collectively, we chose a blend of unique washed single origin ‘Vietnam Lotus’ coffee, which has notes of dark chocolate, date, baking spice, butterscotch while ‘Brazil Oberon’ is chocolate and nutty. This viscous stout was further conditioned on maple syrup and lactose to complement and round the distinct notes of these unique beans.

You can actually smell and taste the adjuncts. Just a little thin for me.

Bottle. Tan head. Black color. No lace.
The coffee smells and tastes stale. Has a banana, chocolate, and nut flavor. Fairly thick and desserty. I’d like this a lot more if the coffee wasn’t gross.

It’s brown, see-through, and lacking the black, inky sludginess that I expected from a beer basically called “density”. The head is a good, dark color, but has an almost soda-like behavior. Dissipating quickly, almost as if there was an added oily fat to the beer. Brewed using coffee that didn’t add a lot of bitterness, the aroma is tons of dark fruits, blueberries, vanilla and cola. Flavors of sweet dark chocolate, brownies with nuts, and almost no bitterness.
