This was another beer given to me by a cousin this past Christmas, as I never had it before. Thought that this would be an enjoyable beer and it certainly was although it could have used a bit more body and less nuttiness and sweetness. As something to relax with, this was a worthy choice although I'd rather have a dessert with pecans in it!
Of course, this poured a nutty brown hue with a ton of frothy, tan head that was quite extensive as it bubbled over the top of my glass like an ice cream float. Tons of layered lacing remained as I worked my through this with much of the suds being thick and extensive! Pecans dominated in the nose along with oats, a bit of dark bread, vanilla bean, and hint of chocolate as the taste felt like nuts, praline, and pie with some soda and sarsaparilla thrown in for good measure. Thin, bubbly, and lively, the oats and grains emerged in the back as this *almost* called for a chaser of water to fully get it down.
Hard to detect the booze here although I'm sure it was present somewhere. This was nowhere near as sticky in the back as I thought as it was more chewy than anything else. No date was to be seen anywhere as there were a few bits of sediment that had to be swirled out of the bottom of the liquid near the end of my session. Plenty sweet, this was a nice treat that wasn't like any American Porter that I had before, although it wasn't quite a substitute for pecan pie. Enjoy this year-round when a dessert is not available!
