I think the abv was about 5 but wasn't sure. Its a sweet & sour borscht creation. On tap very small batch at the source, fairly average beer but they were trying.

Appearance: Poured with a thumb of head that barely laced and did not stick around. The body is a deeper then normal red. It's not that kind of beet purple/red that you'd partly expect, but it does seem a bit too red for regular malt to acheive. Carbonation in the body is very low.

Smell: There is without a doubt a note of sweet beet in there, but it seems to fight with allspice and cloves in the front and a small push of caramel malt in the back. Did not need to warm up to achieve good potency, and didn't really improve things.

Taste: The start of the beer I enjoy, as there is this sweet beet with a slight sour zing that stands out in front of caramel malt, it briefly turns to it's spices but it's a quick flash of allspice and clove when suddenly, this root crop earthy bitterness comes forward as it tastes like an undercooked potatoes contributes to earthy hops to poop the party. It's not tremendously potent but it doesn't taste good, and clings just enough so that the good parts of the next sip can't overcome it unless you pause between sips.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is very low here, but it does seem to focus on the good front half of the beer. That said, the flatter back half just ruins things, as that earthy potato flavor is present in the aftertaste, which while I've had beers that cling on more then this, it lingers just not enough to be unpleasant. The transitioning sadly is a fall from grace, in a fairly rapid fashion.

Drinkability: I mean, it's not getting drain poured so I guess that is something. On the lighter end of medium body, so would probably fare a bit better in the late spring/early fall. It's also sedate so it settles well, but that end note needs to be removed.

Final Thoughts: I mean, when I think of beer, beets are not the first thing that comes to mind, but I suppose if I had to brew with a root crop, and I couldn't use ginger, I suppose I'd probably pick beet or rutabaga? I mean I applaud trying something new, but this wasn't for me. it just has a weird earth note about it, which I presume isn't the hops but some kind of bitterness the beets themselves are imparting. Swing and a miss for me, but I could see someone else enjoying it.
