A perennial favorite here at Tröegs amongst co-workers and fans alike, our Belgian-style Witbier (or white ale) features a blend of wheat, oats, and malted barley along with spices, Belgian yeast and other juju to create a complex yet refreshing flavor. With a dense haze and foamy white head, our Witbier incorporates subtle tartness and a delicate orange aroma to complement the aromatic spices and distinctive LaChouffe yeast. An excellent summertime quaffing delight, Scratch #149 finishes dry and crisp.

a: Cloudy yellow wheat color; poured with a white foamy cap.
s: Citrus zest with some coriander and hint if bubblegum. Pretty spot on.
t: A really nice balance of tart wheat, citrus peel, and lightly spicy coriander note at the end.
m: Light and airy with prickly carbonation.
o: Awesome wits are hard to find, this is one.

Picked up a few bottles at the Tröegs brewery today, so I assume this Scratch Beer # 149 is a pretty fresh Witbier. Pours hazy bright yellow gold color with very active carbonation like champagne racing up the brew to a big foamy snow white head that was full of tiny bubbles and faded very slowly, crazy slow, with the foam so thick you could run your finger through it. It left outstanding foamy lacing clinging to the sides and rings as it went down.
Smells of coriander, yeast, wheat, lemon zest, biscuit, light clove, citrus fruit, herbs, pepper and other spices, and then some very sweet notes. Bread and orange peel trail off of this nice smelling beer that’s refreshing and pretty complex.
Tastes of coriander, funky yeast, wheat, lemon zest, orange peel, biscuit or lightly toasted grains, clove, banana, citrus fruit like tangerine or grapefruit, herbs, pepper and other floral spices, sweetness like honey or syrup, and leafy texture like dry hopping. Complex with funky mixed with fruity sweetness, metallic yeast, floral notes like dry hops and rose petals, and bready flavors that are tart and fruity at the same time.
Light creamy feel, but a little chewy in the body, this had mild carbonation and a slightly bitter and tart finish that was dry.
Overall this was a nice crisp and refreshing summer beer that was full of flavor and very easy to drink. Goes down easy, I could see Tröegs making this a summer seasonal as it was really tasty.
