Poured into a 12oz glass. Beer is Pale yellow, with a 3/4" head. Smell is strong citrus and ginger. Taste is blood orange and ginger, and nothing else detected. Mouthful is consistent start to finish with a touch of tingle from the ginger. Overall beer finishes a little dry with slight but pleasant aftertaste, but the beer is refreshing mostly due to the medium carbonation and feel. I enjoyed this beer quite a bit.

Pours a gold color with a minimal head that disappears quickly. Aroma is sour fruit. Taste is sweet and tangy fruit. Crisp and dry. Not bitter at all.

Google the name. Pretty cool reference.

Enjoyed this from a can about 5 months after the date stamp. It’s held up, and possibly even mellowed out. The ginger lends a nice kick to the sip, and takes center stage on the nose. But it is not a ‘ginger beer,’ no it’s far more nuanced and delicate than that.

Jolly Pumpkin is a brewer I like very much, but whose brews I rate below the average. Go figure. As a Belgo-phile, how can I rate 7 of 8 Jolly Pumpkin's Belgo-inspireds below the average? Answer: I'm tart-adverse.

But Hyrrokkin is nicely-tart and mostly semi-dry... so is still fruity enough to be a good table saison. And it pretty much is with tonight's vegetable soup.

I just noticed on Jolly Pumpkin's website that their gastropub in Hyde Park has re-opened and is now serving food and will soon serve beer. Just in time for a bike-ride down Lake Michigan's shore so I can find another not-so-tart saison. Jolly Pumpkin, A Votre Sante' !

16 oz. can. Clear golden. Smells of strong ginger, lemon acidity, and some basement yeastiness. Tastes of strong ginger too. Sour citrus behind it. Not all that tart, though. Seems more aggressive because if the ginger. A little graininess and some more earthy yeast flavors cut the tartness. Medium light. Mostly ginger and citrus. The saison here is lost, but it drinks fine.

Perfectly clear transparent brew. Good head production; OK retention. Body is the color of sun-burnt straw.

Impressively tart aroma, slightly musty with oak. Lemon, orange, clove, honey, ginger, vinegar.

Just as tart on the palate, but less fruity, with the emphasis clearly on the malt bill and yeast culture. Puckering finish. Light notes of honey, ginger, orange, tannins, lemon, tea.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned in 3/2020. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big juicy/tart/tangy blood oranges, ginger, lemon, lime, red grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, melon, apricot, passion fruit, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, white bread, light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of blood orange, ginger, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, citrus/fruity hops, oak, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with big strength. Taste of big juicy/tart/tangy blood oranges, ginger, lemon, lime, red grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, melon, apricot, passion fruit, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, white bread, light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and Brett spiciness on the finish. Light lingering sourness. Lingering notes of sour/tart/tangy blood oranges, ginger, lemon, lime, red grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, melon, apricot, passion fruit, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, peppercorn, clove, wheat, cracker, white bread, light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of blood orange, ginger, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, citrus/fruity hops, oak, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a fantastic malt/tart/tangy/spicy balance, and no puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering sour/tart/tang/spice. Medium-plus carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy/acidic/tangy, and lightly sticky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 5.7%. Overall this is an incredible fruited wild saison. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of blood orange, ginger, fruity/funky/acidic/spicy yeast, citrus/fruity hops, oak, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, refreshing, and fairly crisp/clean to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/drying finish; not overly lactic. Fantastic balance of juicy fruit, vibrant ginger, hops, and Brett/bacteria/saison yeast complexity; with nice oak foeder presence and a clean pale/wheat malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp acidic/tangy dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example as expected of the brewery. One of the best JP saisons I've had in a while!
