I just poured a beer off one of my remaining kegs of the Stout (Averagely Perfect #2) and wondered how many people ended up brewing this beer. There was a lot of discussion/arguments/fun, but I can only recall a couple people mentioning that they brewed it. Ditto for the APA (Averagely Perfect #1). No criticism or anything is intended by this post/poll, just plain curiosity. For the poll, multiple choices are allowed, I think I have all possibilities listed. If you did brew one (or both), I'd be curious about your thoughts.
My fingerprints are on all three polls. I have brewed APA IPA three times (it's locked in my rotation) and entered it in two competitions. Did not brew the Stout 'cause it's not a favorite style and it looked a little funky (in fairness, so did APA IPA). I'm a big Saison lover and have all the ingredients (including rte5) standing by . . . but . . . it's the funkiest of all and don't know where it would fit in my rotation. I did not vote above because I would prefer to keep my brew preferences confidential . . . hmmm, may have a little slip-up here . . .
Added an extra question to your poll... Voting now but no plan to brew the Saison. Voted for IPA but didn't brew. Voted for and brewed Stout. Voting for Saison but won't brew (maybe next year).
1. Brewed the IPA pretty much exactly to specification. 2. I didn't brew the stout to specification. I had brewed a similar beer (roasted malts and American hops) in the 6 months prior to the polls and wanted something different. I also was not a fan of the decision to use Chinook. But I followed the discussion, voted, and let the results loosely guide me in making an oatmeal stout last summer. 3. I have the ingredients shipping for the saison, and anticipate brewing pretty much to specification.
Might want to edit this again. The first couple should be IPA, not APA. Looks like he was going for APAIPA but forgot the IPA, which sort of changes the meaning.
I didn't brew the IPA to exact specifications, but made a couple of tweaks to match the ingredients I had in stock (base malt, amarillo for cascade) I didn't brew the stout due to lackluster endorsement of those who did brew it. I'll more than likely brew the saison with a couple of tweaks (hard to justify buying even a small amount of hops when already have a freezer full)
For some reason, I always think of the IPA as an APA, thanks for the correction. I have ended up liking the Stout and I really liked/loved the IPA. I'm really looking forward to the Saison. thanks to everyone who voted/replied, hopefully some more people will chime in
I didn't vote but I recently just finished brewing both. I did the stout first, a few months ago. Its drinking very nice. I bottled the apa ipa just last Saturday. Tasted very good though after the dry hop. Both recipes were the extract version and very small tweaks to both recipes as well.
Another question, for those who voted without planning on brewing, any chance some of your votes were just F***ing with us? Anyone willing to fess up? I ask because there were some odd choices made with the Stout, I seem to recall accusations in that direction as well
Can someone post the link to the thread this is referencing? I just joined the other day so I wasnt present when all this was going down.
Look in the recipes sub forum for the two recipes (stout and IPA) to date. Saison recipe is in progress on the forums.
I've never voted to try to F the recipe. All my votes were to make the best IPA/Am Stout/Saison possible. I didn't brew the APA IPA because I didn't have the hops and refuse to pay the absurd markups at my LHBS for them. Brewed the Stout with a yeast tweak (refused to buy a yeast I don't have on hand). Not brewing the current Saison because I am tied up doing pilot batches for the brewery launch which will be using only Brett strains, and don't have time to work in the Sacc primary then Sacc secondary Saison recipe (even though it would be tasty).
Does F the recipe mean funk it up, like we tried to do with picking a Brett (non-Brett) strain? Does it mean laden it with US Fuggles to make a more earthbound Englishy American stout? Or does it mean what always means? I never thought anyone was trying to F the recipes intentionally; I just assumed everyone is embracing the spirit of the thing and trying to make the beer they think is best given the constraints of the previous decisions. Sheer naivete on my part?

The saison is currently being debated.
I'm talking about screwing the recipe making process like the Gang of 39 - just weighing the votes towards an undesirable aspect for the fun of it. Using a Brett that's not Brett and doesn't really produce funk anyways, then pitching it at a crazy high FG for more funk (which it doesn't make anyways), you know, that kinda stuff. Or trying to shove Fuggles into any beer, that just jacks it up.
I've made the APA IPA once. It was great, and that was before my foray into learning about water chemistry. The APA IPA is currently third in line in my future brews, although this time I will use the seasonal Burton IPA yeast from Wyeast. My brewing spreadsheet is already filled out and ready to go! I've yet to make the stout, but if I were to make a stout at some point, I would give it a go. I just not a huge fan of dark beers. At some point I hope to make the Saison. Cheers!
