My good friend @SamCalagione over at Dogfish Head personally challenged me to do JanuQuenchy with him. I just officially accepted.

For each day in January I'll be committed to:
    1. Drinking at least one SeaQuench Ale (no other beer or booze)
    2. Being physically active
    3. Eating better
    What's JanuQuenchy?
You can learn more at Dogfish Head's blog. And there's contest. But I'm doing it because Sam personally challenged me.

That and I've been wanting to take some form of a beer break for a while now, but without completely giving up beer. JanuQuenchy sounded perfect, until I realized that it's my birthday on the 10th and our Extreme Beer Fest pre-party is on the 31st. Oh...and that I'm a founder of BeerAdvocate, part of my job is exploring new beers, and I've never done anything like this before. One beer for an entire month?! How the hell does that work?!

Eventually I said "fuck it" to the part of me that's too comfortable. It's just another birthday. And I'll convince Sam to run SeaQuench Ale through multiple Randalls packed with weird shit so we both have something extreme to drink at the pre-party. And then we can unleash our palates at the fest after a month long reset. Hell yeah.

Anyway. I'll be posting my progress on Instagram. Follow along if you're interested.

In the meantime...is anyone else doing JanuQuenchy or other form of reset in the new year?

If you send me a few cases I’m in. If not, no.

I’m in in the exercise and eating better piece.

    Enjoy

Not into JanuQuenchy, but will be observing Dryuary (for various reasons; health and finance being chief amongst them) and very much not looking forward to it. Got some good stuff waiting for me on 2/1/2019, though.

No hate, but, this blatant marketing scam ensures that, if, I happen to see a DH beer over the next month, I will pointedly avoid it.

Honestly, SeaQuench doesn’t sound like something I’d like to drink for a full day, much less a full month.

I’m planning to go dry between the college football championship and the super bowl. We’ll see how that goes.

SeaQuench? I think that would mess up your palate not reset it.

Enjoy your "boycott," but this isn't a marketing scam.

Nah. It's hardly a palater wrecker and it's not like I'll be drinking them all day. I'm guessing that most days I'll probably only have one while I focus on the rest of the challenge.

Definitely not a scam, just marketing. Nothing wrong with that.

A: we don't see much DH stuff up here in the wilderness to start with, so, not really any kind of boycott at all.

B: I've been a longtime DH fan, dating back to before I moved out here in 2000

C: Encouraging your site users to drink at least 1, specific, beer a day, for one of longest (and, traditionally the slowest month of the year, sales wise) months of the year isn't a marketing ploy? C'mon homes.

No hate. I love DH, and I love BA. But, ......

Marketing scam? An interesting take. I guess this means you’ll also be pointedly avoiding participating on this site over the next month. :sunglasses:

What is your view? If I (or anyone) were to suggest the same deal, but with a different beer, would it be welcomed with the same open arms?

Perhaps my use of the word "scam" was ill advised. Shrug. Nonetheless, given that a certain brewery started a thing, and the governing body of this website doesn't suggest we participate, but rather strongly implies that we should buy a particular beer, once a day, for a month, doesn't strike you as at least as a bit of a conflict?

I suggest that BA use this as a launch pad, and chooses a beer every month for us. Nothing could go wrong there, right?

My take? Already implied. But if it bothers you so much, boycott both for the month of January.

Again, boycott is not my term. Also, that particular beer is only available occasionally in my neck of the woods (maybe Sam should kick some distributor in the ass, and have them do a better job of repping his beers) and I'm a fan of DH beers going back to the mid 90s when I still lived back east.

But, since this was a brewery driven concept, and nobody can blame them for trying to drive sales, it does seem a conflict that our favorite site is now "suggesting" we each buy 31 of the same beer. Leading into a fest. Shrug, such is our modern world.

Maybe I'm the one that's off center, and seeing a conflict of interest where none exists.

Perhaps we can run a monthly contest for nominating the "Official BA Beer of the Month"?

Whether you used the term “boycott” or not, the definition of the term includes “voluntary and intentional abstention” and that is what you said you planned on doing.

Personally I see the OP simply as saying, “Here’s what I, as a person, am going to do and why. Anybody else?”

As for beer of the month, it sort of already exists, just not monthly, when folks on this site get together and organize an “online tasting” of a particular beer discussed in a particular thread on a particular Saturday.

But why? I honestly don't see the point. I mean, what is the benefit here? Sure, eating better and being more active are a given, but how does drinking the same beer over and over line up with this? Drinking no beer at all would make a lot more sense in this context.

I guess if it was a non-alcoholic or at least low-alcohol beer I could kinda see it, but like this it just doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, the benefit to DFH is obvious, of course, but to the individual undertaking this "challenge"? I just don't get it, to be honest.

SeaQuench has been marketed as a "healthy" beer due to the lower ABV and having sea salt in it to help avoid dehydration. Marketing ploy aside (which I can't fault any business for) it's a good way to get people to give up beer without really giving up beer so this may be easier for many. If you drink higher ABV beers every day and commit to this routine you would see a difference.

Haha... "Drinking at least one sampsquinch per day."

I cant tell if this is serious or not. I will be giving up beer myself for a bit. My liver and wallet need a break. Plus i'm getting fat. If you are going to do it, go big man. Don't be afraid to go dry outright for a couple weeks. If I feel like I need a drink, it will be red wine for me. to each his own I guess. cheers and happy new year!

@Todd I will most certainly be partaking in a reset for the month of January!

It will not consist solely of SeaQuench, but there will be some mixed in.

The reset, for me, will come down to scaling back my weekly consumption (when it has worked for me in the past, I've limited myself to a set number of drinks Friday - Sunday), based off my current holiday consumption, and pairing that with cleaning up my daily nutrition.

Cheers to starting 2019 off right!

I'm sorry, but the idea of a "healthy beer" is ludicrous and 4.9% ABV is not "low" just because the trend in craft beer is going towards higher and higher ABV DIPAs and TIPAs. That's still higher than your average Lager and actually rather high for a Gose.

I think that advising people to lead a more healthy lifestyle by drinking "at least one" of an almost 5% ABV beer a day is questionable at best, to be honest.
