Summer Trip

Crafted at Blacksmith Bar & Restaurant in Berlin, Md.
This cocktail is inspired by our friends at Burley Oak Brewing, just a bike ride away from Blacksmith, our restaurant in Berlin, Md. We tweaked the German theme of Burley Oak’s Sour Trip Berliner Weisse using two classic Italian ingredients: Amaro, a bittersweet digestif made with roots and herbs, and Limoncello, a lemon liqueur from Capri. The result is a tart, slightly sweet, herbal cocktail with hints of roots and citrus.
1 oz Amaro
1 oz Limoncello
4 oz Burley Oak Sour Trip (or another Berliner Weisse, like Bell’s Oarsman or The Bruery’s Hottenroth)
3 dashes West Indian Orange Bitters
2 each large basil leaves, Chiffonade
1 each orange slice
2 pinches orange peel, zested
Muddle the basil and orange slice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, Amaro, Limoncello and bitters. Shake and strain into a double old fashioned glass filled three-quarters with ice. Top with Berliner Weisse and orange zest. Serve with a swizzle stick for mixing. ■
